I was actually trying to remember a name of some other singers/musicians so I went to the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame site to look at a list of names to jog my memory, and happened to see this...hey, Jules Ah See inducted this year!

Several months back during a lesson Alan Akaka was curious if I would be able to provide a quote or something on him since he knows, well, I like him am a big fan, and Jules was being nominated for that honor...so I wrote up a paragraph that seems to have wound up quoted in the article above! Was kind of odd stumbling across my name semi-randomly like that...

About time (and good job)! This guy was a monster musician and he must have been very charismatic as well. I find that he is my absolute go-to when I want to swim in the Hawaiian pool of genius. Gabby, Sol and Jules are the cats.

Its about time, With Emmons being my first all time favorite, Jules is almost up there as well. Not only an Hawaiian player, but I think on the Tapa Room tapes Jules emulates Joaquin Murphey quite well with his fast single string leads and licks, I think he could have fit in great with the Spade Cooley Band.
I love Jerry Byrd, but Jules does it for me, from his solos and fills on the Hawaii Calls lps to the Alfred Apaka stuff.
Plus he could sing and was a great entertainer with a live audience! |

Jules excelled whether it beautiful slow melodies or swing tunes. A consummate steel player gone too soon. He and David Feet Rogers are the guys who touch me the most with their playing. For living Hawaiian players, Jeff Au Hoy, Bobby Ingano and Alan Akaka ring my bell.
