I received an old Sho-Bud Baldwin a little over a year ago. The guitar sustained water damage, being submerged in the flooding from Hurricane Rita. The guitar went through several hands with people wanting to attempt a restoration and later deciding against going through the trouble. I almost made the same decision.
At the time, I was undergoing two surgeries to insert an implant within a paralyzed vocal cord. The first surgery was not successful, leaving me with a harsh rasp for most of 2020. The 2nd surgery at Vanderbilt required a team of 3 doctors and although I can no longer sing, I got back about 75% of my speaking voice. The thought occurred to me that the Sho-Bud was not too far off from where I was. Left in its water damaged state, it would never sing again. I decided to restore it as best I could.

Because of the water stains, I decided to go with a sunburst...much like the old Fender 400 color scheme:
Jr. Martin and his son Anthony (Cajun Accordion builders) performed the magic on the woodwork, Harry Jackson performed the magic on the mechanism:
Needless to say, the guitar is singing again...

Beautiful work Joe, that guitar has risen from the dead. Did you replace the top deck w/ 1/2" material?

Thanks for the wonderful comments...!! Eric, I would be infinitely more troubled about losing my ability to play versus losing my ability to sing. Ian, no wood replacement that I know of other than the inlay. You can see where bracing was added underneath to get things to line up. That was likely due to warping from the water damage. Ricky, I thought about sending photos to you via text, but I figured my thread here wouldn't get past you...LOL..!! I LOVE the restorations on your site....GORGEOUS..!!
Now for those of you that think the guitar is fine and dandy as is, something was brought to my attention before I ever laid eyes on the finished product. When I went to Mr. Harry's shop to pick up the guitar, I performed a mockup to verify....and it does seem to be a consensus....
The vintage white fretboard is glued onto the neck....
....the black fretboard is a mockup....I can always change it down the road..

Joe, you couldn't have asked for better folks for your project! Everyone knows Harry's skills when it comes to setting up a guitar. Anyone who has ever seen a Martin custom accordion would agree that they are beautiful and of the highest craftsmanship.
I had the pleasure of meeting Junior and his family a few years back while on a trip to Gulf Shores. We spent the night with his cousin Carrol Benoit in Mauriceville. He and Anita set up a "private" tour, lunch, and concert for us at Junior's shop which included his grandson and other great players. They even let me sit in with them! We certainly enjoyed the beach on that trip, but the highlight was our day at Martin's!

Joe -
I met Carroll at the first TSGA show he attended. No booth, just a guitar to gauge interest. We became friends, and later I spent the weekend with them while I decided the details of the Resonator he would build for me. I also helped him with his Dallas show booth for a few years. They are truly wonderful people.
Junior and his family are special. They treated us special when we were there. He's an accomplished steel player as well. I never thought about him taking on a cabinet refinishing project, but they certainly can more than handle it!

There should be an award given for the greatest steel guitar renovation/restoration in a given calendar year. All the forum members could vote as there are always lots of good candidates. We could call it the Ricky Davis award, as just like Bob Wills, Ricky is still the King.

I would like to thank all you guys for the great complements, it was a fun project to work on. I also purchased an MSA with Kyle, and it was at the time that Mark had a stroke and could not build my body for my guitar, So I volunteered to build my own MSA guitar body, this was a treat. I wish I had more time but the accordion business is taking all my time. I do wish Mark the best
