The Stringmaster came out in 1953 and Leo used "Swamp Ash" wood on all Stringmasters and Deluxe(stringmaster pickups) until 1960. Swamp Ash was a cheaper wood but considered a "Tone Wood" as it was lighter and was grown in wet areas around rivers...swamps...etc. But eventually became more difficult to keep that type wood and much easier for regular grown Ash wood....so from 1960 on was "Whatever ash/wood...etc....and to my ears, is a MAJOR tone difference from stringmasters from 1953 to 1959; to any stringmaster after that. I won't play a Stringmaster after 1959......Yuk; no character and just sounds dead to me.
