It’s been just over a year since I’ve released Keepin’ It Real, my most recent CD. The record didn’t quite have the success that Steelonious did, but I am proud of the music and the work that went into it. I got some really nice reviews and people said some crazy good stuff about it. But I’d like more people to hear it, of course, and to get a chance to hear a) Sol Hoopii’s Rickenbacher BD6 in action, though, sadly, not in his hands, b) that you can still get a ton of playing out of a 6 string C6 tuning, c) that the lap steel can do lots of other things than they tell you, and d) the guest soloists are dear friends and world-class musicians who make the world a better place and deserve to be heard. Yes, it’s jazz, and some a little challenging, but I want to open up ears.
Please download the music to your computer, phone or whatever and give a listen sometime. If it inspires someone a little, I’d be happy. Free download in all different formats.

I can’t say enough about how great this record is. Some of it is challenging to listen to…like all great art it demands that you meet it halfway (or more), but Mike’s arrangements ease our ears into what can sometimes be treacherous harmonic waters(I mean that 100% positively…many of these songs have very unusual chord changes, but are amazing compositions). And of course all of the playing and tones are top notch…Mike makes that panda purr and holler, and I don’t remember ever enjoying uke playing as much as I do on this album.
Bottom line…Keepin’ It Real is a tour de force of virtuosic playing and ground breaking vocabulary. Thanks Mike!

Thank you, Brad! I'm really glad you dig, man.
Steve, I admire the heck out of your musicianship. You are a monster on everything you touch. And you've got this extroverted quality that exudes joy. I really admire that. I'll never forget how excited Steinar Gregertsen was when he first came across you. He was pretty blown away.
I do really appreciate the comments. I had some very heavy people listen to this and tell me they really liked it, but just not enough to include it in their limited review space. I totally get that. One writer in LA was even playing it at his own cocktail party. But there was a Japanese reviewer who really seemed to have an affinity for the steel guitar and Hawaiian music. I think hidden in this record was that I imagined myself as a couple of musicians in Hawaii who played this music in their own time for pleasure. That's how I wanted it to get across.

A Hawaiian rhythm section supporting a bebop soloist was, I'd bet, the dream of several advanced players in the islands back in the day. Keepin’ It Real is one of the best steel guitar records ever recorded and aesthetically, a fond look backward while simultaneously taking a big step forward. Mike, you solved some of the phrasing problems that have long made tackling the classic traditional jazz repertoire so daunting on a lap steel - and you did it on Sol's guitar! Even if you're on a different path now, you can be proud of what you achieved with this CD and Steelonious..
ps totally agree re Steve = joy.

This was my thought exactly. Thank you for putting it into words! I may be new to this, but I know an important recording when I hear one. |

Thanks, friends. It makes me happy that you dig it, but even if you didn’t I would be cool with that too. Only 6 people have downloaded the music via this offer, with 3 actually paying for it! I get it, man. I rarely want to listen to anything that my own curiosity hasn’t led me to. And these days, none of it is steel guitar based. But there was a time when I ate up every single note played on a steel guitar that I could find, with several very generous friends sharing their personal collections with me.
This is the last recording I am releasing in my own name.. I have other plans to take my music into another realm under a pseudonym. Crazy, I know, but it is so vastly different.

Amazing stuff, Mike — some of it is way over my head, but definitely worth the time listening. I can’t begin to imagine how you worked these out.
