A little minutia of detail; pre1965 ( non-reverse) Firebirds had nickel plated mini humbackers. The only guitar they used this pickup on after 65 was the non reverse Firebird in either chrome or gold plating. Your lap clearly has the chrome plating. Very odd and cool. I wonder if they weren’t trying to use up those pickups. |

Likely an attempt to use up both the Firebird mini-humbucking pickups, and the '57 - '59 Ultratone bridges, which were specially made for the significantly narrower polepiece spacing of the PAF humbuckers.

Good observations. I think this is exactly right. In the face of dwindling shipping numbers for lap steels in the mid-‘60s, they were trying to be efficient in the parts they selected for the design.
Does anyone have any serial numbers for 66/67 Centuries that they’d be willing to share? As I mentioned a little earlier, 0072xx to 0074xx is (so far) the only range I’ve documented. I’d be curious about any known serials outside that range, in particular. Thanks! |
