Ok I confess, I played with Cody in the post LPA days in "The Commander Cody Band" from 80 to 83. Toured the US and Europe, at various times including some of the LPA guys, esp. with Bill Kirchen. He had a band called The Moonlighters that was the core of the Cody band at that time. I must agree with Winnie's observation, In spite of their reputation as stoners they are some of the most intelligent and well read people I have worked with. They could however party me under the table too, the reputation was not unearned..
I followed Steve Fishell (excellent player) in that gig, after my departure Cody stopped using a steel player for a while, moved back to the east coast and now has a regular steel man again.
Fishell went on to producing in Nashville and still plays steel and dobro as far as I know. I'm in the SF Bay Area, not playing out enough.

I've seen him in the past 10 years or so with Dave Zirbel on pedal steel and I know that he had Tab Tabscott play with him in the Northwest.

I ran into George Frayne at Stinson Beach. CA. in th early 90's. He was playing at the old Sweetwater that night.
We went to Smiley's and sat at the bar.
George was living in Saratoga Springs and was also doing a lot of painting.
I had become friends with his guitarist, Mark Emerick. If I remember right, he plays some steel too, but not with LPA.
I saw LPA was playing in Saratoga Springs around '95 and showed up at sound check to see if could sit in. George said yes, so I set up my EMCI, screwed in my pack-a-seat legs (screw in legs are great, sturdy and no squeaks) excited to play.
I don't think he recognized me from Smiley's.
I was about to put my gear on stage and George took back his sit in offer.
Like Asleep At The Wheel, George had some major, major miles under his feet.
One of my LPA faves: "Cry Baby Cry":

John Tichy went on to be the head of the Mechanical, Nuclear, and Aerospace Engineering department at RPI. Talk about underachievers!

I was listening to some later-era Cody recently with some really great steel by the forum's own Tiny Olson

I did the gig regionally for a few years before my pal the great Chris Olsen took over. Always fun.

Love Nicolette. So sad she is no longer with us,

Who’s the steel player on this one?

I got to do a one-off with Cody and the band at Suwannee Festival a few years back. It was GREAT fun getting to play on all those tunes I came up listening to when I first started playing in the late 70’s.
