In the 10.000 range for a suit? So I guess it came out of GP's wallet to dress up the Burrio Brothers. I've read that he was quite wealthy.

I know the band got a healthy advance from A&M when they signed up. Gram had plenty of money but I doubt that he financed the band's Nudie suits. he did however already own at least one of his own, adorned with rhinestone-studded submarines... his previous group was the International Submarine Band

Very cool article. The real surprise for me came at the end when the connection was made between the "country" style clothing he was known for and it's roots in and similarity too Eastern European folk clothing.

Yes Karl, It's kind of funny how as we grew up and thought everything we knew was original, was just a retread or a better version of our ancestry, and that's a good thing.

I wish I could look to the past of my heritage to see what formed myself, but that also might be scarey Whoa!

Nudie took his short past to a truly new original american artform and we are all the better for it, and I do agree to the Roy 'Wink Texas' Orbison comparison!

I have Nudie’s biography. The “rest of the story” is that when Tex Williams and the band went to his shop to be measured for their first western suit band uniforms, there was a lot of brown water involved. The measurements were all wrong, the project was a total loss and had to done over with new material and associated costs. Laughing Laughing

Gram's Thousand Dollar Wedding is about the bride's gown he ordered fom him, which the woman never wore, because he, GP, messed everything up.

Great post Craig. I've always liked the trademarks like Porter's wagon wheels and Ray Price's headdress but my all time favorite has to be Pete Kleinow's golden pterodactyls. I still yearn to own a caddy with steerhorns, colt SAA door handles, and a whinney-bang-bang horn. Nudie was, and still is, as cool as it gets.
