My Ultra has the GFI II pickup but it sounds thin to me. If you were going to change it what would you go for and why? I'm after the classic 80s country steel sound.
Thanks !
JB

I had an S-10 Expo with GFI II and it was OK. It was traded for an Ultra D-10 and I put Lawrence 710's on it and thought it was great with the 710's.
I downsized, sold the D-10 and now have a new Ultra S-10 with pad. It has the GFI III pickup and has too much "bassy" low end and I'll probably replace it with a 710.

According to Bob at GFI the difference between the II and III pickups is the blade material. The II is plain steel, the III uses stainless steel.

From what I understand, the GFI II pickup is basically a slightly modified George L 'E 66'. You might try the 'Steeltronics' single coil pickup, that should bring you closer to the tone that you seek.

Yep, as David said, Scott Swartz at Steeltronics! He'll talk with you as to what works! You can reach him here on the forum! The man KNOWS his stuff! Rewound 2 for my Emmons PP. Brought it to life & never looked back!

I had a couple Truetone single coils I had bought for another project sitting around, so I had those installed in my D-10 Ultra and love them.

If I hadn't had those, I'd be getting a set of Steeltronics, definitely.
