IF I remember right, Hank SR. dabbled with a 6string lap steel, and Jerry Byrd tried to show him some stuff.
I don't remember reading that it was a successful experiment.

In about 1969 or 70 Hank Jr. and the remaining members of his dads band the Drifting Cowboys played a show in Fairmont WV. Don Helms was playing steel. Hank Jr. went over to Don's guitar during his show and actually picked the guitar while Don ran the bar. And done a few Don's original licks from his dad songs.
Mr. Helm may have actually gave Hank Jr. lessons years ago.
