Is open D favoured over Open E, are they not played the same, just E is higher in pitch?

Now have a SX 6 string lap in G,.A Tele plus telecaster, Larrivee acoustic.Also have a Fender resonator guitar with new Quarterman cone and spider,and an Allan tailpiece.Playing through a Fender Super Champ XD,using a little delay on the amp and a Harmonix Holy Grail Echo pedal,set on Hall turned to about 1pm.Just got a Fender Dual 6 Stringmaster style. Bought a Yamaha FGX5 Recently and love it. |

| For a while I had open D on my Dobro, and open E on my lap steel, just based on a different scale length and what felt good. C6, and other tunings, are where there are a dozen variations with subtle or not subtle differences, but mostly people know what you mean when you say "open D". |

They are the same intervals, played the same way, but the difference in pitch matters. It comes down to personal preference.
The lower pitched D rends to give a nice growl for blues, and generally has lower string tension for a looser feel. (Keeping in mind that string tension is easy to modify via string gauge selection). Open E tends to feel tighter and maybe “sweeterâ€. It is also a bit easier for players used to guitars in standard tuning, since the fretboard root positions are the same.

Open D for me as base tuning. I capo up 2 for E. I like it that way.
If you're into DADGAD, a half step tune up of the 3rd string puts you there. |

| Open D and open G are popular bottleneck tunings for an acoustic guitar with medium gage strings. That's where a lot of us began, and migrated to lap style later. |
