I inherited a beautiful metal “brass” squareneck Dobro a couple of years ago.
Trying to find approximate year of build
Looks like OMI pre Gibson.. 70s or 80s?

Please see photos for serial number.
Thanks for your help.
Gary

Model 33H, almost certainly 1976. Usually OMI put the year first and material last, i.e. 6 107 B instead of B 107 6, but there are lots of exceptions. The fret marker pattern is also unusual.

Noah,
Thanks!
I thought 1976.
You have a keen eye!
Those are two stick on pearl dots by the original single center one
at the 12 fret that are easily removed.
Just made the 12 fret stand out more.
Appreciate your input.

I just bought a similar dobro a few months back! Yours is in better shape. Mine has gulls and a sailboat on the back

That's a great solution for the 12th fret. I keep going to the 15th fret because of the double dots there. I'll need to find some stickers like yours.

We had a local music store when I lived in Knoxville that frequently had interesting used and vintage instruments. One they had that I won't forget was about that same age model 33 round neck custom.

It had very fancy pearl inlay on the peghead and fingerboard. The Dobro logo was engraved pearl. BUT--the back was engraved with a rather provocative scene of a porno posed naked woman! Quite a sight.

Apparently the guy who ordered it got caught with it by his wife and had to sell it cheap and quick! It was for sale at the shop at a very low price for a long time...

But at this same store, I got a really great early Rick Fry Pan in nearly new condition, a nice Console Grande, several nice old Nationals, both electric and resonator as well as a Fingertip Bud.

Close--this one was wriggle engraved instead of sandblasted and quite explicit spread eagle...

Not at all in good taste.

Lloyd,
I got those stick on Pearl inlay dot markers on EBay.
Not sure if they are still there but
not expensive.
Thanks for everyone’s help on this.

Thanks Noah and Michael,
It’s a 33H.
I am also fortunate it is
mint for a guitar made in ‘76 with original case.

Michael,
I know it is a matter of preference but I owned a biscuit model.
This is a “spider”.
I think this one has a full dobro sound. Too my ears, a
unique and full sound with a clear resonance.
Both nice, but IMHO each suited to the style of music you play.

I have owned a number of dobros but am down to my first OMI wooden D that I bought new in ‘73 and a JD Blackbeard.

Gary,
Here are the other Dobro pages from the '76 Emmons catalog. I still have my first one too, 60D I bought in 1976.
