Update: looks like it's a bad reverb Pan...
Just picked up this Peavey Vegas 400. Amp sounds good and reverb does add the reverb effect. Unfortunately, when engaged the reverb begins to create a feedback-ish moan/hum that will increase in volume and then continue even when Pre and Post gain are turned down.
Any suggestions regarding diagnosis and repair would be greatly appreciated.

I hope it's not too difficult to repair. I drove 4 hours round trip to meet the seller halfway, so returning the amp is not something I'd prefer to consider. Other than the reverb and some scratchy pots (not a big deal), it really seems like a good sounding amp in good cosmetic condition.

After reading this Ken Fox thread...

...I decided to pull the tank this morning.
I found that the input and output wires were labeled, a piece of cardboard had been installed under the tank and while there was a touch of rust along the outer edge of the reverb tank, the connections and the inside of the tank were shiny and clean as a whistle. Foam in good shape and nothing rubbing.
With the tank removed and unhooked turning up the reverb made about the same sound as before -not quite as loud- but without reverberations!
A few questions then...
1) Am I right in deducing that the problem seems to be the circuit and not the tank?
2)Does the Vegas have a similarly swappable reverb chip as the Sessions did that I can try and replace?
3) Anything else I should try before taking it to the repair shop?

I would try another tank
The IC that drives the input and output is the same one. A dual op amp
The old Session did not use an piano chip |

The Reno had the same 9EB2C1B tank as the Vegas. Hooked it up and the hum was gone!
The amp sounds quite good. The Reverb is good but not great, but I assume that means it's working correctly.
Now here's the question.
What's a good reverb tank replacement to try that would have a richer tone and longer decay?
I figure I'll buy it and whichever sounds better will stay in The Vegas and the other will go into the Reno.

Mod Tank arrived today. Plugged it in and WOW! It's richer, cleaner and slightly longer in decay than the stock Accutronics tank. The Reverb control now seems to have a much more useful range as well.
I run reverb on almost all the time so it seems like a whole new amp with noticeably richer tone.
My experience is pretty limited, but I do think that going with the longer decay 9EB3C1B instead of the medium decay 9EB2C1B was a good choice for me. It's not a totally fair comparison though since the long decay was a new MOD and the medium decay was a 30 year old Accutronics.
All this to say I'm very, very happy with this upgrade.
