Curious if anyone knew of a program that would convert Youtube audio to an MP3. I searched for this topic on the form and saw answers from 2014 so was curious if there was a more current solution. Thank you.

The software solutions depend on what operating system you use, and are confusing as all heck in my opinion. I'd just run a wire out of the headphone jack into an audio recorder. Most of today's recorders make .WAV files on an SD card which are easily converted to MP3, and some of them (like the Zoom H2 that I use) can make MP3 files directly.

what BOB said , there are a bunch of MP3 recorders which you can just plug into your phones outlet, the Zoom H2 is a fine unit.

On a Mac, Audio Hijack from https://rogueamoeba.com is a great tool for capturing any audio on your computer and spewing it out in any format you want.

If you are using Windows, the free program "audacity" will record the audio of anything playing on your computer. Just Google how to record streaming audio with audacity. There are a couple of settings that have to be changed that I can't recall. Once recorded, you can export the audio to one of several formats, including mp3, that audacity supports. I have been doing this for 10 years or so. The best solution I have found, and it is free.

If you use Firefox or Opera this is the best solution IMO, it's dead simple: https://technologyto.com/extractor.html. You need to install the optional open source media converter to convert to mp3.

There is also a program called "Jaksta" for Windows or Mac that will download or record audio and video from any source.

To Britt and everyone:

I happened on a great piece of free software for Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu (African Windows? Ha!), called Youtube to MP3 by Media Human. You copy the url of a song you like from youtube, paste it into the little app, and it magically downloads and puts the song into iTunes (presumably Apple Music, too) as well as a copy into your Downloads folder. It even names the song, though not quite as accurately as I like, I just manually change it after it downloads.

The app is somehow free, but safe, and I spend $10/year extra for the Turbo Boost option, songs download in just a few seconds.

This has save me oodles of money in iTunes downloads, and loads of time compared to when I used to grab a playing song with Audio Hijack, then have to trim the song's ends, clean it up and manually file it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I don't know how they legally get away with this, but I've used it for about 10 years now, works like a charm.

They also make an app called YouTube Downloader that downloads videos. So when a rare video shows a steel player's hands during a great solo, this is really handy. Costs $20, but worth it to me for transcribing purposes since I teach steel lessons. Not a subscription cost, either, one-time fee. I can then view a video in my app Transcribe!, and slow down, alter pitch and loop video fragments. Brilliant!

Go here to find out how to record any audio playing on your computer with Audacity:

https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer.html

It is free and you do not need any other software to convert files. Simply export the recorded audio in the desired format after it is recorded. It will record any audio, from any source while it is playing on your computer, including streaming video. No need to download videos, or any other conversion program An added benefit, it is the best free basic recording software available.

I use You Tube Down Loader. It is fast, easy and can down load the videos or just the MP3s.

What a great utility! Downloaded, tested, and registered. I got the perpetual free upgrade option, too. Thanks for the recommendation!

I use Audacity.
It's simple and I can modify it for whatever reason if I want to before I export it to an mp3.

This! Makes a perfect video and separate audio file as an option from YouTube or anywhere else by employing screen capture. Whatever you see and hear is recorded. Choose the separate audio file option. You can choose what type of an audio file you want. .Wav. files don't have compression so they produce a perfect copy. Mp3's are compressed to save hard drive space but degrade the audio. The more compression the more it degrades. The free Bandicam download will do it but I think there's a 10 minute time limit per recording with the free version. I've been using it for years to make my own custom CD's. I just drag the audio file from Bandicam into a DAW and trim the front and back so there's only music. Just like getting a free record.
