I think this is a mechanical issue so I put this under Pedal Steel.
I have no cartilage and therefore arthritis in the first joint of both my thumbs. Very painful as many of you know. (My wife has to open her own pickle jars.)
First joint is close to the base of the hand.
Not so bad on the bar hand but the picking hand is quite painful.
I'm having surgery soon on my right thumb where the surgeon will harvest a piece of tendon from my arm to rebuild padding at the joint (best I can describe it). There are a number of ways to do this surgery.
I'd appreciate hearing from any of you all who have had this surgery. After recovery did it affect playing? How long was recovery? Other comments welcomed!

I am interested in this issue too. Been having thumb pain (CMC joint?) for a couple of years. (Don't want surgery at this point.)
Playing 6 string and saxophone aggravates it; but the hand position for steel isn't affected!

I've had this particular surgery in both thumbs (a few years apart). In both cases the recovery period was months-long but it did eventually provide relief. I still have occasional pain in these joints, but nothing like it was before the surgery. So well worth it in my case as I don't think I would still be able to play my instruments without it.

Fred, I have the exact same thing... bone on bone at the base of both thumbs... they wanted to do surgery 3-4 years ago, but I wasn't ready for that and started taking Turmeric and Black Pepper as per advised here on the Forum... My Thumbs are now better than they were 5 years ago, and I'm back to opening pickle jars for my wife.
Talk to Ricky Davis about the surgery... he had a different surgery that was very successful with a shorter recovery than the one your speaking about ... where they actually increase the space in that joint by shaving off some of the bone so it no longer touches... he was back to playing quickly. There's a whole thread on this here somewhere. _________________ Dale Rottacker, Steelinatuneā¢

Thanks guys. Good info and very interesting.
At this point I'm still planning to go ahead with the surgery, Dr. Joe Sherrill here at UAB. _________________ Show Pro SD10 guitars
