Hi,
I’m brand new to the pedal steel. Just bought a GFI student model. I’m playing (trying to anyway) through a cheap old $100 Vox that I bought for my son like 10 years ago that only works with the Gain button on. Sounds pretty harsh. Want to get something better. Just learning to play in my living room so it doesn’t have to be big. I’ve heard mention of the Fishman Loudbox mini for acoustic guitar in the $360 range. Any thoughts or suggestions ?
Thanks in advance. |

Boss Katana. An excellent value ($350) built-in effects, programmable amp models, headphones out for silent practice, lightweight. Programming is a bit wonky, but some great steel guitar tones can be found in it if you are patient. Suitable for gigging too. The thing can get loud, even on clean settings. |

Thanks, Are you referring to the 50 watt or 100 watt? |

I have the 100w Mk I. The Mk II’s came out a couple years ago, but I cannot speak to what is significantly different, other than price.
There a few features in the 100 that I needed, which the 50 did not have. Namely, an FX Loop, a GA-FC Footswitch jack, and the capability of accessing 8 different patches at a time rather than 4. If you don’t need any of that and are just looking for a pretty good sounding amp using just the knobs on the front panel, then the 50 will still certainly provide plenty of tonal and sonic options.
Here is a very good rundown of the differences between the Mk II 50 and 100.

I agree with Fred. The Katana 100 is better suited for pedal steel and guitar. The 50 will work but the 100 is much better and respected in the steel circles. I have one and it's lightweight with good tones. |

Get one of these. I love it for practice and have used it for a while. I owned a Katana but like this better. You can even download my tones from its cloud.
