I am going to buy an 8 string lap steel in the near future. I am an older guitar player and weight can be a problem for me when playing for hours at a time. I would think that lap steel weight would be less of an issue just sitting on your lay but, for those of you who gig on a regular basis, is it a problem? What is the average weight of an 8 string lap steel?

They vary quite a bit. A Bakelite Rickenbacker might weigh upward of 9 lbs, while a light wooden steel could weigh half of that.

I have never had a problem with the weight on my knees for an extended period. But if you do find it problematic, you can always get a stand.

Different instruments of the same model can (and do) vary substantially. Especially those with bodies cut from wood. I have otherwise identical Gibson Ultratones where one is twice as heavy as another (literally). Both supposedly have maple bodies.

If weight is an issue, consider a lap steel stand from Deluxe34:
