I became friends with Ray Knapp when I went to the Hawaiian Ssteel Guitar Association show on Oahu, in the mid eighties.
Ray was from Ohio, near Lima, where Jerry Byrd was born.
Ray was like "Skipper" Montee and were Jerry's biggest fans that I know of.
Jerry gave Ray his big, goldish Buick and sent it over to Maui from Oahu, on a barge.
One time when I saw Ray, he had been on the beaches and had a whole trunk of beach sandals. It didn't matter if they were a pair or not.
Ray did a great record with the Waiau Sons from Mauai and I went to one of their gigs at some hotel and they asked me to sit in.
Jerry Byrd was in the front row! I could have croaked!
Jerry also gave Ray his Trotmore guitar.

Be sure and take in the Hawaiian entertainment with steel guitar at the Halekulani House Without A Key. It starts at 5:30 PM. You can get a good seat at that time.

Great environment !
