Topic: How many lap steels is too many lap steels? time to offload? |

What's your thoughts how many is too many?
I'm thinking I might have a bit of overload. Not sure which one or two I would let go. or if i should
Only been playing for a little over a year now and ended up with:
1 prewar silver hawaiian, 2 prewar model b7s, 1 gibson eh185, 1 duesenberg fairytale, 1 vega commander, 1 hudson dobrobrobrosteel(?)...
Is there too many lap steels one can own at a time? 
I know there are folk with significantly larger collections... but i'm just a wee lad. |

| When it’s a distraction from actually becoming a better player it’s definitely too many. A lot of time spent in pursuit of guitars and tunings is time that could be put to use really shedding. I understand this well from experience. |

As long as you bought them at fair prices, you can sell at fair prices so:
research prices in Reverb and Ebay's sold listings or ask here
OR:
If you need to lease a warehouse to hold those and your Marshall 8x12 stacks and Hammond B3's, too many!

You have too many when they stop bringing you joy... I have just under 30 lap steels. Is it more than I need?... of course. But I enjoy having a variety of steels to play when the mood strikes me.
The beauty of these instruments inspires me to play.

A start for sure now that I think about it.
When I first started, I loved the looks of the Hawaiians so...I think I ended up with 3 or so and bought a frying pan a22. Wasn't a fan much of all 4 of those sounds. I've just kept 1 of the pans out of sentiment. Rarely play it. For the price I paid, it's a great piece of art.
I also realized something while reading this thread. Lap steels aren't all that popular like old spanish guitars, some of effort for the older models is somewhat for myself in keeping the steels themselves in great condition, so as they're almost 90 years old now. Maybe they can live another 90 years before becoming stuck rotting away somewhere else. |

I was joking of course, but you'll know, or your life partner will probably let you know when it's time. 
I used to ask myself the same question about musical instruments and gear, but time and economics took care of most of it. There's nothing wrong with having things that bring you joy. Just relax and enjoy it while you can. |

I think I'm at "enough". Got a couple consoles (the Stringmaster is gathering dust...might think about selling that one someday), my main instrument 8 string clinesmith, a beater 8 string SX for travel, a tricone and a dobro. Oh and a Fender 400 for when I get really adventurous. I've been realizing more and more, new guitar doesn't really change the way I sound. So, the way I look at it, find something you like to play that doesn't get in the way of you playing, basically.
Shoot I should worry more about changing the strings on the guitars I own vs getting new guitars.
Only other guitar I'd be tempted by now is one of the various slide veenas for Hindustani classical. But that's almost like a completely different instrument, anyway.
(and no my wife isn't reading over my shoulder and that's why I said the above haha) (I think)

I don’t like to think in terms of “too many†anymore. There aren’t really any rules about it after all. I suppose that if acquiring more of anything starts to negatively impact your ability to pay the bills, then there is a problem. Otherwise, if it brings you joy… enjoy!

Coincidentally, the first two non-pedal guitars I obtained were a Bakelite and a Weissenborn (branded "Maul Maid") that I purchased at Island Guitars in Honolulu in the early 1980s. Still have 'em. |
