I think Beard ought to make a ML Signature model of that Road-O-Phonic with two modifications...a body extension for playing standing, and a Clinesmith or Lollar horseshoe in the bridge position. Seems like a cool guitar though...very versatile.

Beard will put anything you like on a Roadie, if you pay for it...mine has the Silver Foil in place of the P-90...I'd think that a horseshoe would interfere a bit much, and perhaps a Lollar string-through would be a better choice, like on a Coodercaster...

Beard guitars are essentially custom made, so you can get chocolate sauce if you want... Don't forget there is a complete cone and spider under the bridge, so you need some room. I expect that you could play that guitar standing up just fine, it's got a fair bit of body on it, really quite like Megan's main ride.

A few years ago one of the companies I cannot remember which one now I think it was MSA come out with a belly bar. The bar fit into the side of the guitar and could be pulled out for stand up playing. I thought it was a terrific idea.

Megan has been my inspiration to spend more time with high bass open G. She gets a heck of a lot out of that tuning. If I get half as much I’ll be a happy camper.

I love my roadie so much - it is the only thing I gig with now - that I commissioned a custom redwood/maple/ebony version and can let go of the current one.

Check it out:

I use the guages suggested on Elys page .

48 38 34 24 18p 16p , I tried 18 wound but found 18p better for me.

Just my opinion.

These two seem to invariably radiate a pure joy of playing music that's really inspiring and, because it's a place I'd like to be but don't reach on most days, rather humbling.

Here's a link to one of my favorite covers by Larkin Poe. Rebecca's toe tapping during Megan's solo cracks me up!

Nic, there’s so much to choose from with Lindley. As a sideman, he was on an amazing array of 70s rock classics, especially with Jackson Browne. For a lot of us, his Running on Empty solo was the gateway drug. His stuff with his band El Rayo X is an awesome mashup of funk, reggae and rock n roll. Later his solo and duo work, with a lot of Weissenborn, shows a huge range of taste and tone. If you look for videos, look as his vibrato — it’s huge.

If you can’t tell, I’m a fan. Very Happy

My gateway solo was "one Of These Days" by David Gilmour and when I got my first lap steel (BR9) in 1980 that's one of the first things I learned. Once I discovered Lindley I absolutely fell in love with his playing and has been a major infuence and I am now enjoying Megan's playing just as much.

After two long years of pandemic postponements I finally got to see Larkin Poe with Megan Lovell on lap steel and her sister Rebecca on guitar and lead vocals. It was the full band with bass and drums providing a solid rock foundation.

Boy, what a show! The lap steel playing was superb, very tasteful and raunchy. And I hadn't appreciated what a strong voice Rebecca has. The encored with a stripped-down format – snare rather than full drum kit – playing Come On In My Kitchen.

I read above about Megan's GBDGBD tuning on her Rickenbacker, but she played another steel midway through the set, which I didn't recognise. Does anyone know what other tuning she uses? Could it be open D?

She has a Fouke Industrial baritone steel that she used on one of the recent albums, and a Beard Road-o-phonic. I can't remember the tuning she mentioned in one of her videos. Odds are really likely it is a major triad tuning though.

This one maybe?

I don't recall seeing this one...judging by the shape she may have had it custom-made as that's roughly the same shape as her Panda-contraption, same basic outline as the other rig, but obviously different neck, modern looking tuners.[/img]

I realize this Forum's focus is on Megan and that is why I checked them out today. Honestly, within two songs I forgot about the steel was totally hooked on Rebecca Lovell, she has one of the most distinctive female voices I've heard for ages.

Good luck to them both and thanks to Megan for keeping the instrument alive!

I agree, Rebecca Lovell has a great voice. They've leaned in hard on the blues / Southern rock styles lately but their early stuff had a lot of range to it (maybe they were somewhat "finding themselves") and I really like the out of print Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter EPs. If you like bluegrass, the second Lovell Sisters album is great (Time to Grow) and starts to feature more of Rebecca as lead. Can't remember who Megan said played pedal steel on that one, it was a well known Nashville session guy though as I recall.
