Here's a preview of two solos I'll be covering next month for an online course on Joaquin Murphey and Noel Boggs for Centrum's Red Hot Strings Workshop that might interest some of you non-pedalers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmH0EpIYDzs

These are two of my all-time favorite solos by Murph and Boggs. And since they're playing over virtually the same tune, with the same band, just a few years apart, they serve as an ideal case study to compare the styles of these two individualistic players.

If you have any questions about the workshop, please don't hesitate to reach out. Aside from this course, I'll be leading a session on transcription titled, "So You've Transcribed Your Favorite Solo, Now What?"

There will be workshops all weekend for tenor banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and string bass. Instructors include forumite, Joel Paterson, Matt Munisteri, Albanie Falletta, Tyler Jackson, Dennis Lichtman, Matt Weiner, Gabe Terracciano, plus a great lineup of guest artists, including Howard Alden, Noam Pikelny, members of the Seet Hollyhawaiians, and many others.

The dates are May 14-16, Registration link and more info can be found here: https://centrum.org/vintage-jazz-workshop/?fbclid=IwAR3ftTIYiddgX

Hope you can join!

Oh, yeah....."Florida" has been my favorite Murphey solo since I first heard it 35 or 40 years ago. Completely cuckoo and typically Joaquin.

Not enough people have heard it. The last I looked it wasn't on Youtube....and hasn't been reissued since the original Cooley LP as far as I know.

Good job, Mikaya!!!

Mikiya, I just signed up for the workshop. I'm looking forward to it.

Jean-Sebastien, it looks like yes, you can watch later.

The website says: "And, the entirety of our weekend’s activities will be recorded, and all participants will have streaming access to the classes, concerts and workshops through the end of the year – so we hope that you will take the weekend at a relaxed pace, knowing you will not have to miss out on a note!"

Wish it was live this year! I live a ferry ride away from the usual site at Port Townsend. Sounds like it will be a great workshop. Excellent topic to cover.

Hi all,

I just received the final schedule from the organizers. Fortunately, all the workshops, panels, and staff performances will be recorded. So if you register, you can log on and access the footage through the end of the year.

Here's a preview of some of the solos (Lester Young and Harry "Sweets" Edison on JIVE AT FIVE) that we'll be tackling in my course, "So You've Transcribed Your Favorite Solo, Now What?" If you're new to transcription or are looking for ways to move beyond the first step of imitation, this course is for you.

Hope to see some of you this weekend!

This was a fantastic weekend event, filled with lots of interesting courses across multiple instruments and styles. If anyone is looking at this thread, and considering going in the future I highly recommend it.

Thanks to Mikiya for posting here, I wouldn't have attended otherwise.
