What's the benefit in using the pre-EQ patch to the volume pedal on a Peavey amp? As opposed to volume pedal before the amp input?

Puts the volume pedal after the gain stage. The eq section sees the full input guitar signal, it stabilizes the eq, and the amount of “drive” in the tone stays the same at any VP level - like a master volume.

I’ve found that the reverb sounds better with the 3 wire hook up, and the constant pre signal evens out the treble over the volume range..
