Dick Bills band circa 1957: Dale Anglin, Glen Campbell, Red Rimbert, Jake Remore, Dick Bills (hand tinted and yes, THAT Glen Campbell). Dick Bill's was Glen's uncle.

I believe that Dick Bills was Glenn Campbell's uncle by marriage.
He married the daughter of Dick Bills brother.

Steel player with Christina's band is "Dorothy". Dorothy and Christina look like sisters to me. Maybe the piano player, too.
San Fernando Valley band playing at "Johnston's Cafe".

Photograph caption dated December 2, 1949 reads, "Christina and her Rhythm 4 returned this week to Johnston's Cafe. Gals wear very enchanting costumes at work, as can be seen in above picture. Christina plays bass, Dorothy, steel guitar, Francis, accordion, and Rose, piano."
IDs wanted on these 2 guys.
Guy in the white shirt is LA area player, 1950s. Likely pretty well known.
Other guy MIGHT be Andy Sanella. Slight chance. Pic was on the wall at the well-known Ziggy's Music in Phoenix.

Who is this on steel with a Hawaiian group?
June 25, 1963; Castaway Restaurant, Burbank CA.
Far right at the mike: Doug Mossman, actor on Hawaiian Eye and Hawaii Five O; Sterling's brother.
Other details unknown.

I have that Hawaiian pic too and was going to post for an ID.
Here's Andy Sannella. Could be but not sure. The hairline in your pic with the Epiphone steel is similar but the eyebrows look different.

According to the Ukulele Hall of Fame: "Myrtle Stumpf authored Stumpf's Ukulele-Method and Solo Book, which was published in 1917 by The Southern California Music Company. Stumpf was a well-regarded steel guitar player who was a student of Joseph Kekuku, the person many regard as the inventor of the steel style of guitar playing. She wrote what may be the first published method for steel guitar in 1915. Stumpf was highly involved in the early world of Hawaiian stringed instruments. In the late teens she wrote for the Crescendo magazine in a column called the Hawaiian Round Table. She shared the authorship of the column with C. S. DeLano. DeLano was another well known steel guitar and ukulele player and instructor. The column carried all sorts of information about the ukulele and the steel guitar. Sadly, Stumpf died just as Hawaiian stringed instruments were entering their heyday. In the January, 1920 issue of Crescendo, C. S. DeLano mentions her passing with these words: "Permit me here to pay respectful tribute to Myrtle Stumpf, whose untimely death in October was a severe shock to her many friends. She was a lady of fine personality and a player and writer of ability".
RIP Myrtle and thank you for laying the groundwork for learning on our instrument.

I'm not sure, but I'd doubt it.
As far as I know, Lani (Lani Muk Sang) was working with Lena Machado in the mid 40s, so presumably was born prior to 1930; maybe even as far back as 1920?
How old is that guy in the 1963 pic? Under 30?
Here's a pic from the 1952 sheet music of "Mapuana".
Is this Lani?

Bobby Black with Jimmy Rivers. According to Sam Whiting, "Sometime around 1960, the Gibson twin-neck was stolen from the back of the club, and Rivers went back to the single- neck. He stopped playing there in 1962 after his wife died and left him with three children to raise. He moved to Rocklin to get steady work in carpentry and start a maintenance company."

Wow......that is a tremendous pic of Rivers and Black. Looks like it was taken at the 23 Club, based on that wagon wheel gate. I've got pix of Carl Smith and the Wills band on that same stage.
I was at a wing-ding in San Francisco in the 90s when Rivers was presented with a replica of that white double-neck....can't remember who made it. I didn't know the original had been stolen.
David....yep. You are right, that is Danny Stewart. Here he is with Arthur Godfrey.

A good friend of mine went to high school in Kailua, HI with "Flip" (Don III) McDiarmid, Don Sr's grandson. I first met Flip when he came up to Minneapolis to be best man at our mutual friend's wedding. I played By The Waters Of The Minnetonka on my tricone during the service, and Flip "flipped-out." We had an immediate bond.
On a subsequent visit to Oahu in the '90s, Flip brought us to a small neighborhood club near Honolulu International, where they didn't exactly roll out the red carpet for white folks. A massive native woman played the electric guitar (an ES335TDC) and sang some of the sweetest contemporary Hawaiian music imaginable. No steel in her trio, unfortunately.
Before we headed home to the mainland, Flip went into his dad's (Don Jr) garage, dug through some boxes, and presented me with an original copy of Pure Gabby, a double album that I still have and cherish.
Flip McDiarmid went on to inherit Hula Records after his dad died, and oversaw the transition from LPs and cassettes into CDs. |

Cool Pictures and Info thanks for sharing these! I wish more people were into the Hawaiian Steel Guitar these days! I used to play different Hawaiian songs at dances years ago. Occasionally, I'd get a request for one, but no one ever asks for those anymore.

Quite often my guitar slinging buddy and myself do a Hawaiian gig.
I have worked up a considerable number of Hawaiian songs for the pedal steel and they go over quite well. I particularly remember one time we performed at a senior citizen's center. You should have seen those old gals doing the hula in their grass skirts to the tune of "Tiny Bubbles"!
