That is me Joachim, been listening to them alot lately. My Byrds greatest hits album in mono sounds pretty good. See if you can find this on utube.. The Byrds- Turn,Turn,Turn Live.. no lip sync with Gene Clark, pretty classic stuff.(sorry I still don't know how to post a utube video here) Our old bud Chip Fossa would be getting in on this. |

I am a big fan of The Byrds, they were one of my favorite bands back in the day. I haven't heard this song in a long time, but the Younger Than Yesterday album was my favorite one. The guitar tone on this is excellent. One of the first things that came to mind when I first heard this was what kind of amp the guitar that's playing the intro was plugged into. Does anyone have any idea of what it could have been? |

From what I remember reading, McGuinn ran his Ric 370 into TWO analog/tube compressors, and then into the board without an amp when recording.. I saw the Byrds several times back in the day, and his tone was quite different live... He and Clarence used 4-FOUR!, Super Reverb amps... EACH!.. At least they did when I saw them.... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Thanks for the comments about their gear Bob. It seems I recall McGuinn talking gear on a talk show and him saying that he had some sort of compressor built into his Ric 12 string. The intro on this is a 6 string and since the pictures show one of them, I'm not sure who, playing a Gretsch, then I would assume that it was the guitar that was played on this session. There seems to be a little dirt on the tone, like it was played through a smaller tube amp cranked up a bit, but I'm just speculating. I would love to know what they were using. That's interesting that McGuinn and Clarence White used 4 Super Reverbs, I bet they sounded great! |

Their procucer Gary Usher made a record in the eighties. The singer was Tom Kelly:;

I believe there's also some six-string playing on "Notorious Byrd Brothers" that he also produced. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |
