Hi all, a local library asked for my recommendation for good guitar and ukelele instructional books to buy, since they circulate those instruments now. I've never used books to learn these instruments, so I turn to the Forum. Does anyone have recommendations? Maybe for a kids tier as well as adult tier?

Years ago I got a beginner Mandolin book from Mel Bay. Did the trick for me. Most kids today will want streaming media/online videos. Mandolin Cafe is a good place to start for all things Mandolin.

For teaching beginning guitar to students who want to learn to read music, I like Alfred's New Guitar Course, Book 1. It takes note reading one string at a time and adds 3 string chords one at a time. There are always tunes to play with the notes you have learned so far. In the back, there is a great chord chart, set up by key, showing you 1, IV and V plus the relative minor for each key. I have students learn 3 at a time, then play rhythm guitar on a song or two in that key. There are also books 2, 3, 4, in the same course. It does not move so fast that the student gets over whelmed. I have been teaching from this method for over 30 years.
