Gotta be a recone-I'm pretty sure they had ceased production on"D"series
JBL by 1979...

As far as quality-who knows?

That’s what I thought.
In ’79 the recone would have been done with an original JBL kit?
Or were third party kits already available then?

A JBL D or K 15 original cone or factory recone will have a five digit number (21037 to be precise) stamped on the back side of the cone. What you have doesn't have such a number. So it's most likely an aftermarket recone by a 3rd party. It could still be a good sounding speaker.
