Glenn Gould said Mozart died too late rather than too early.

He didn't exactly rediscover Bach, but he kept his music alive when it had gone out of fashion.

I'm reading a biography at the moment which busts a few myths, chief of which is that he died tragically young. He was 36 and the average life expectancy in Austria at the time was about 45. He worked too hard and didn't look after himself that well, so he was unlucky maybe but barely tragic.
