Those pictures from 2006 are actually stored on Basil's web site, which doesn't use https. Your browser may be refusing to load them because of that. The internet is changing! |

I have a vague memory of Jerry Garcia playing one of these. Can anyone confirm? I didn't know anything about pedal steel at the time, so I may be mistaken.

I've collected several photos of Jerry on pedal steel and I've never seen him on a PS-210...I'd love to see one if it exists 
Also the story I've read is he originally tried to learn on a Fender 400 and gave up. A few months later the Dead were passing through Denver and he stopped at a music store. They had a more traditional 3x4 and the salesman explained how it's tuned and the basics of the pedal/knee changes and the light bulb went on over Jerry's head and he bought it. The story then goes that he had it shipped to the infamous Haight-Ashbury Dead house and pretty much locked himself in a room on the 2nd floor and worked hard for about 6 months to learn.
At least that's the story I've heard, I'm sure there are other variations floating around

| Dennis, the store that Jerry Garcia probably visited would have been Guitar City. Don Edwards owned it at that time, and sold pedal steels. IIRC, I seem to recall seeing Garcia playing a ZB guitar prior to playing a Sho-Bud. |

I have no idea who these people are or if they are relevant to the guitar. I did find some cool stuff in the box with all the mags and newsletters. Here is the link. Reworking the PS210 was published in the Steel Guitar Record Club Newsletter #3. I found issues 1-13 missing 2 & 5. There is also a Fender 65-66 catalog and other 1960's-80's mags and lessons. I am mailing most to the buyer but will finish taking pics and adding before I do. So happy its soon in the hands of someone who will love it.

Just a little minutiae about the 210. If memory serves me, in early 1969 I was contacted by Gene Fields because he found out that I owned a Sho~Bud Crossover. He asked me if I'd come down to Fullerton (I lived in West H'wood at the time) so that Fender's patent attorneys could examine the undercarriage to determine if the neck selector system of the 210 was in conflict with the S~B patent on the Crossover. Turns out it wasn't and Fender went on with the 210.
Gene was real nice and appreciative, and we grew closer years later through the steel show thing. He was an exceptional thinker. I asked him how he conceived of the 210 changer, and he said "many nights, laying awake in bed, staring at the ceiling and visualizing stuff."
I know he used to play the clubs south and east of Los Angeles, but I never got a chance to hear him onstage. I heard he was a player for sure.
