Trying to do a little Waylon-esque stuff with the steel but my MXR phase 90 distorts with the hot pickups. Anybody know of other (cheap) pedals that’ll take that signal from the steel without breaking up?

I've heard the r28 mod helps get rid of the distortion.

Nathan, I had the same problem with both the MXR mini and the Mooer as well. Bought a $24 Joyo and it works fine. I run mine in front of the volume pedal

Just cut the resister out of mine...gets rids of the volume boost, but when playing multiple notes at the same time, still a bit of distortion.

Have you tried it AFTER the volume pedal? That level should be plenty attenuated so as to not overdrive the pedal.

MXR 90 distorted for me even after placing in line after volume pedal. EHX Small Stone seems to work ok.

I use a D.P. phaser made in Switzerland. All kinds of controls no distortion.

I use the garage tone oil can as well- cheap, simple and dependable, definitely does the trick with steel's traditionally high output pickups.

I'm currently using the "Big Joe" phaser.

https://bigjoestompbox.com/products/r-408-phaser

Never had a problem with too hot of a signal. I've said this before, but i will repeat it. These types of "modulation" effects, operate best in a loop. Or at best, ran through a loop creator before the front of your amp. That's exactly why you fella's are getting an over driven distorted signal out of these. Besides the fact as brad mentioned, your pup signal is too hot.

It's the green pedal with the picture of Delta Blues player "Big Joe" Williams on it.

I still use an old Systech Phase shifter fro the 70's. Best phase shifter I've ever used, kind of on the large side, though. Finding one is another thing.

They aren't cheap but the Mutron Phaser and Phase 2 will take a line level signal without distorting so they should be able to handle a pedal steel.

There is a clone of the Mutron called the Nutron by Luck Duck.
It is considerably cheaper:

I believe it's the EH Small Stone circuit that was licensed for use in some Peavey amp's in the 70's and was part of that country phaser sound we recognize.

I went through a bunch looking for something that approxamated Waylon's tone. If you're handy with a soldering iron this is reasonable and works great:
