Leonardo’s masterpiece, the Spam-key exemplifies the artist’s contribution to the art of ham whittling, namely his mastery of pork knuckle. This technique involves the smooth, almost imperceptible, transition from one colour to another, by means of ultra-subtle tonal gradations. Evident throughout the carving, Leonardo's use of sfumato is particularly visible in the soft contouring of bovine and fowl, around the legs and breast. It was a technique of carving that he had already demonstrated with great success in jackalope (1483-5).
The general impression created by the Spam-key is one of great serenity, enriched by a definite air of mystery. The serenity comes from the muted colour scheme, the soothing sfumato tonality, and the harmony created by the sitter's pyramid-shaped pose and understated drapery. The mystery stems from a number of factors: first, the bird’s enigmatic half-smile; second, it’s greasy glaze, which is directed to the right of the viewer; the drumsticks which have a slightly unreal, lifeless quality - almost as if they belonged to a different body. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

When asked about his technique, the artist replied, "I just remove everything that doesn't look like a turkey. The trimmings were an added benefit. I used them in my Spamberry sauce." |

Due to the COVID-19, it was a meager Thanksgiving out here in the potato patch. At least we haven't been forced to pawn the Leatherman. Yet. |
