I'm curious to a list of all the prewar laps so far I've got in my late night research recollection:
Rickenbacker
Vega
Audiovox
Harlin Brothers
Gibson
National
Recording King
Dobro
Regal
Supro
Kalamazoo
Oahu
Dickerson
Epiphone
Sound Projects
Slingerland/May Bell
Kay
Harmony
I'm sure I'm missing more. I'm just loving reading material all over the interwebination finding more information out.

I think Harmony and Kay were in operation before WW2.
Supro is post war. National and Dobro merged to form Valco and switched to wartime production. They returned to musical instrument manufacturing after the war. |

I know that Harlin Bros built steels after the War, but I believe their pre-War stuff was all farmed out to Kay.
Supro was indeed pre-War (the first National-Dobro cast-aluminum steel was actually a Supro) but the three brands were really from the same company.
Recording King steels were made by Regal and Gibson, just a brand name rather than a company in its own right. Kalamazoo (and Mastertone, and Cromwell) was also Gibson.
K&F was 1945-6. Maybe they started a few minutes before the War ended, but they're definitely not pre-War.
Dickerson was building steels in the late '30s; they later became Magnatone. Epiphone built a ton of steels. Sound Projects built their cast-aluminum steels under a couple of brands. Slingerland/May Bell sold steels but the bodies may have been sourced from Regal. |
