Thanks to everyone for all of the fantastic info!

If anyone has any information about the pedigree of my S-12 #15946, I would appreciate it.
It came to me as a 7 pedal / 6 knee in a different flavor of E9 Universal from Bobbe Seymour at SGW.

I haven't been able to find my original D10 Pro II that I bought around '76 to buy back, so this is my new old Bud I'm picking up tomorrow!
1975 LDG Serial # 8525. This thing must've been in the case for years! All original, just serviced by a pro mechanic and ready to go!

I took over the Sho-Bud Division in 1980 when it was moved to Conway Arkansas. The serial number on a Sho-Bud steel was in numerical order. It had nothing to do with the model or date. Your Guitar is a Model 6143
It was built 4/11/1972, It was built by L.T. And OK'd by H.J. It was shipped 4/27/1972 to the Fred Gretsch Co. in Elmhurst Ill.

Gene....welcome to the forum! Your ability to decipher Sho~Bud serial numbers is akin to "the world is round" discovery. You are going to be a busy man around here, as Joe has remarked. Smile

Hello Gene, If you have the time could you tell the age of my Sho-Bud #12334 ? Anything at all is more than I've got on this guitar .Thanks up front, Paul

Hello Michael,

My SHO-BUD is a Maverick , looks like maple covered with a brown material, single neck 10string . I wish it was finished maple rather than covered with that brown material . That's all I know about this unit Paul

Just to add to the collective knowledge, my Sho Bud is serial # 12530. I guess it must be a Pro I from 1977 - 3+4 and nylon tuners and pot metal fingers. Oddly, the changer is 2 raise 2 lower, except the E strings, which are 3 raise 2 lower. I'm not sure if that is a later modification or a transitional factory offering.

Speaking of mods, I have resurfaced the grooved fingers with the stainless steel tape, though I don't really expect that to be a permanent solution. Long term I'll probably make new 6061 aluminum fingers and convert it to a Kline mechanism by adding a 1/8" steel drilled end plate. (Yes, I'll post a thread when I get there, since I know the Kline fans will want to know about it.)

My sisters and I are looking at our father's Sho-Bud Professional, and we were planning to come here and request a ballpark price. But instead, we've got a mystery.

I've been reading the forum in an attempt to keep from making a fool of myself, and stumbled upon your local treasure, Mr. Gene Haugh, and all his information.

The mystery is: we believe we've found the serial number: 7971, which is one of Gene's missing numbers. BUT... we also have the receipt from when Dad bought it (new), and it was purchased in July 1971. Near as I can tell from all of these serial numbers, that number shouldn't have come along until 1975.

There is no paper label on the body, so I don't know what model it is. It's just that four-digit number engraved on a plate.

Does anyone have info I don't that would help to explain this?

Edit: Sorry the picture is so huge

I'd have to go on a wild search to explain my answer, but the info is available on the forum...somewhere, I should have copied it. I have 7962 and it was made in Nov-Dec of 1970. Your guitar is a very late 1970 or very early 1971. The numbers skip 7001-8109. Some of those were custom, or experimental, but some were used on guitars like ours.

It should be a FANASTIC guitar. Mine has "the tone" Sho~Bud is legendary for. I paid 2300 a few years ago. It was set up by Ricky Davis. Mine and the one you picture are "The Professional" model.

Thanks, Rick. I appreciate the quick response.

I love me some steel guitar (of course) but since I don't play, I'm not familiar with the subtleties of "tone." But I do know that Dad was mighty proud of that instrument, and took exceptional care of it. Our first goal is to see that it goes to a good home. Smile

Just had a sneaky look under my dad's and his SN is 16301 which nails it down to April 1981. It was an export to the UK and I believe he got it the same year (Brand New).

Does anyone have any further info such as who it was built by please? It would be really cool to tell dad.

Sho Bud Pro 1

Many thanks

Hello Michael and fellow Sho-Budders. I have been watching this thread for about a year but my Bud has been quarantined at a band mate's house for all of that time. I just got it back and here is the info. Professional (6143?) s/n 1958. 8 x 4 but I am sure that at least two knees were not originally on the guitar. I bought it around '95 I think from a fellow in AZ. Log me in and if any other info is available about the guitar I would be grateful to hear about it. John

The "lost" serial numbers 7001-8109 on Gene's list aren't actually lost, they were used on the Baldwin era guitars between '67 and early '71. They just skipped over those numbers when the numeric sequence reached 7000 in Jan '75 since they had already been used.

As Rick said, your dad's guitar is a very early Professional, it's the model that followed the Crossover (Crossovers were kind of the Edsel of steel guitars), and was probably built in late '70-early '71. It has different inlay banding than the rope style common on later Professionals, which mostly have serial numbers in the 1000-4000 range. Did your dad buy it direct from Sho-Bud, or from a music store? It would cool to see the sales receipt if that's not too personal.

Rick - does yours have that same zig-zag inlay?

There was a pedal steel guitar for sale on the sales board at our post office.
For Sale:Pedal Steel Guitar/$250/Old/needs work...
So I called and talked to the daughter of owner who had passed away.
I thought it was pretty nice guitar so I bought it.It's a Sho-Bud maverick/yellow.
I'm just now getting to setting it up.Very basic guitar compared to my GFI.
No knee levers.I put new strings on.It stays in tune pretty good. However when I press on the pedals to activate the string pulls. They aren't in tune.Above the jack are 10 tuners for the strings. They are tuned with an alan wrench. However,I can't find the correct size of wrench.I believe they might be stripped out.
Could someone out there in PSGland steer me to someone who knows more about this model then I?
Thank You Very Much!

Yes, indeed it does. It is the same color as well and #7962 (Nov-Dec 1970). Probably made a week or two before Pamela's dad's guitar.

I'm working to buy a 1977 LDG from an estate sale, #11642. I'd like to find out some info on the guitar, specifically the store it was originally sold to. I suspect that I played this same guitar for several hours in the summer of 1977 at a vendor's booth at a fair in Central Kansas.

Any info would be appreciated!
