Questions for steel guitar forumites: What in your opinion, is the best cleaner/polish for Mica, for Metal, and what is the best lubricant for a steel guitar to keep the parts moving freely> Thank you for your input.

Tri-Lube Superior for lubrication.

For polishing up the aluminum, my top three choices in order of preference:

1. Met-ALL
2. Simi-Chrome
3. Mothers

Paul Franklin Sr. told me to use Pledge when I bought my guitar in 1989...I use a metal polish for the aluminum like Never-Dull

Ian,

I laughed out loud for sure! He's about as funny as the Moron Brothers! Thanks for sharing! Sometimes we need a good laugh to help with a Monday morning!

Polished Aluminum for light scratches "Simichrome" or Harley Davidson aluminum polish (It looks and works the same). Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish for non abrasive.

I used a Teflon based liquid car polish on the formica and polished aluminum, on my Franklin. The kind I had was no longer available and now use one of the new ceramic based car polishes (Next Gen Ceramic Spray). I used this on everything on my GFI including fretboards. Cleaned up an old (2000 year model) well used GFI D-10 Expo that it can pass for a relatively recent guitar.

For cleaning and light touch-up, Never-Dull “Magic Wadding.” For routine metal polishing, Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish. Buff it out with old white sock, and finish it off with a micro-fiber cloth. For heavy duty work - Simichrome.

Mica - Whatever car wax I have around the house.

I’ve still got a nearly full can of old fashioned Simonize paste wax here. I’ve used it on Mica and black lacquer guitars before. It helps protect metal too.

I’ve thought about buying a can (about the size of an old fashioned snuff can) of Renaissance Wax. Firearm collectors use it to protect those with a blued finish. It provides a beautiful high luster finish and protects from corrosion. A can cost about $15, but they say a little goes a long ways.

Hi all, Here's what I use,
Simple Green for cleaning, Tri-Flo for lubing, aluminum polish (Mothers etc. your preference), for ends & metal.
I learned this from pro restorers!
Great results!
