Its always gonna be a personal choice, but it's illuminating to see what successful working steel players choose. |

The "best" pedal steel for 2020 is the same as the "best" pedal steel for any other year.
It's the one that inspires a player the most. |
Good with the politics, and also true. |

If I were buying new, I would probably think in the line of a Justice then a Mullen or Sho Pro. Been a Sho Bud guy for almost 40 years. Can't help it!!! I'm spoiled!!! Sho Bud Super Pro with metal necks, NYXL nickel wounds, Sho Bud P/UP's. No frills. Steel Guitar Black Box and a NV112. |

I have an old Sho~Bud that is gorgeous.
But I like my metal-over-maple Zum Encore better. It is a marvelous playing and sounding guitar. It has quit my looking and lusting. Almost. Mostly.
But I would listen to the guys above that have been doing this for 40 or more years, really fun to see what they like. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

OPINIONS ARE LIKE BELLY BUTTONS !! EVERYBODY HAS ONE.. WHAT I BASE MY OPINION ON IS WHAT IS BEST FOR ME. FACTORS I CONSIDER ARE QUALITY, AVAILABILITY, SERVICE, FACTORY SUPPORT,REPUTATION ETC... I MET DEL AND DIXIE MULLEN IN DENVER IN 1970 WITH A PROBLEMATIC E 9 PICKUP ON MY SHO-BUD D10 PROFESSIONAL. DEL WOUND A NEW PICKUP AND INSTALLED IT FOR ME, AND IT STILL WORKS PERFECTLY! I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL MULLEN GUITARS AND HAVE HAD GREAT SERVICE FOR ANYTHING I NEED FROM THEM. MIKE MANTEY IS NOW IN CHARGE, AND WILL TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF YOU!! |

I have 6 PSGs, but I've only had one brand new one.. a Mullen G2. Lacquer with a wood neck, and I've quit looking at guitars for sale! ðŸ‘
Great service before and after the sale. Excellent product! |

If I was in the market for a brand-spankin' knew pedal steel guitar (and I'm knot), I would purchase a Mullen, for three reasons:
1) They've been building PSGs for quite some time, so they obviously know what they're doing.
2) Mullen continues to maintain an impeccable reputation.
3) Their factory facility is a reasonable drive from my home.
If I was still living in the Gopher State, I'd purchase a Williams. For exactly the same reasons.
But that's just me... |

For good tone my choice can no longer be bought new.
For that reason my only choices are 50 year or older model steels.
I should say tone is subjective I just like the tone of old Buds an push pulls an Marlen pull release steels.
An a simple Loyd Green set up on older steels works well for me. |

There is only one way to answer this. The O.P. needs to buy one of every steel mentioned in this thread and see which one he likes best. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Easy: read the "For sale" listings, the ones you don't see there are the ones players are hanging onto.

Mike I love mine .. well I have to say that I have loved all of them.. but by far this one is my favorite... so to me this is the BEST guitar built today...I mean when it comes right down to it the PSG is nothing more than a machine with a neck on it... your fingers and brain is what makes it sound good! _________________ Been playing all of my life, Lead Guitar, and Pedal Steel, sing Lead and Harmony.. play other Instruments also but I hate to admit to it.. |
