Yes the Allen Bradley "Type-J" refers to the high power (2-watt) hot molded, panel mount pots. The taper is indicated by the next to last letter (or sometimes last letter, in non-mil markings) in the part number. Pots with an "A", "D", "K", or "R" after the last digit are what you want (That's a log, or volume taper). Pots where the letter after the last digit is a "U", "S", "F", "Y", "M" or "C" are all linear tapers (usually used for tone controls in our application).
The pot number I always recommend is JAIN200P504AA

As for the Dunlop; go to Tom Bradshaw's page and it's explained there. I do find both the AB and Dunlop are very similar in their response; but I have a Dunlop in one of my old Fender Pedals and i have the original AB in my Sho-Bud pedal that was put in brand new 50 years ago and still works perfect and I used it on all my recordings(all the Richard Linklater movie soundtracks the last 10 years); all the Dale Watson albums from 1996-2003 and All the miss leslie CD's and all the Weldon Henson CD's; with no his or hum or cutting in or out and taper is to die for> here I even used it on the Grand Ole Opry in 1999 so listen for yourself; that is what the AB pot taper sounds like for a 30 year old ShoBud pedal at that time.

This clarostat has those same numbers ,
The goodrich got tired after years of use need a new one , the other is a PEC ,I put in to hold me over ,
Also feels/sounds like a different taper than goodrich.
And its very cool to have
One of my pedal steel heros on the forum , reply to my questions.
Thank you so much

Ricky, I understand the taper part and why an algorithm pot would be much better for a volume pedal, but would there be any difference in the sound vs. a linear pot?

I don't really know that answer George; as I never compared them that way. I found that the diff in cable manufacturers made more of a sound diff. than a volume pot.

Ricky, is this not a good pedal pot?

I have had it about 35 years.

Thanks. Ricky. And you're so right about cables. That's why after 30 years using George L cables, I now make my own which I like better with my Evans amp.

Yes Jerry; any AB 500K Type J pot is mighty fine to me and if there is no part number printed; than it is very old and very very good...and for volume.
Cool George; that's the only cable I've been using the last at least 20 years....long live George L Cables.

Ricky, one more question and I will leave you alone. I have three Allen Bradley's, all three are made in the USA. Two have the letter "A" at the end, so they are log pots. The third one is # 40089B. The "B" is not included in the choices you gave. Do you have any idea if this one is linear or logorithm?

You have been so much help. The identification information you have given me is priceless. Thank you so much.

I'm sorry George; it was such a long time ago I copied those numbers and studied the Allen Bradley 500K Type J potentiometer.
But from this picture you can see "B" is a Counterclockwise Modified; as what Bill just referred to. And I would say that is quite a rare find.

Reverse taper? I am glad I found this out before I installed it. It would have drove me nuts trying to figure out what was going on. I would have had to wind the string backwards.

Being a Goodrich dealer, I don't know of a SQUARE Goodrich pot.

They had the black pots like the Dunlop, but made to Goodrich specs. But that is gone now.

Goodrich now uses the Honeywell Clarostat pot.

Tom Bradshaw (and I) have a small black square shaped pot. I have not had one single complaint about this pot.

So Phillip, where did you buy your Square Goodrich pot. I am curious as to what it is.

Thanks,
Bill

I have sold many of the Dunlop "square" pots and had no problems. Perhaps it was wired wrong? Should be input positive to end terminal, center terminal to output positive and other end terminal to ground. As to clockwise or counter clockwise, just reverse the end terminals. No need to reverse wind string.

Philip,
Please revise your first post and remove the Goodrich name. Someone may see this and not read any further and spread a bad word about Goodrich.

Thanks,
Bill
