My favorite Steel Guitar for tone is a "73" Sho Bud Lloyd Green. The overall color of the tone coming from a "73" LDG is unbeatable.

I'm quite fond of my old Stage One. That's why I play it. Records better than any other guitar I owned.

Most of my steels sound similar because of the way I play, I guess, but my Sho-Bud Crossover has a great sound. It’s REALLY heavy so it doesn’t get around much anymore. It sounds great on recordings. I had a Carter D10 long ago that had a very Emmons-ish bell like quality and great sustain even though it was all-pull. One of my big regrets letting it go.

Derby SD10 3X5 that I recently purchased and a BMI S10 3X4. I believe it takes a bit of time to find the sweet spot and right amp/gear combination to get your tone. Each of the steels I own have a great tone when paired with the right amp. It's different for every one. My Mullen D10 8x4 is wonderful, the Stage One took me a bit of time to match a great tone, but I found it. Old MSA Classic D10 8x2 was the same. A previous Sho Bud Crossover had the tone, but required to much tweaking.

For my ear my 1970 P/P, with the original single coils in both necks pushing through a WEBB amp.

As you can see from my .signature, I have three. My favorite tends to be whichever one I'm playing now. They're all great!

This butt-ugly old 3x1 bowlin' ball sounds as good -- if not better -- than anything else I've ever played:

I’ve had enough steels to say some are special in the tone department. An some are
TONELESS!!!
I guess this statement is true for us all.

I have an old Sho Bud Professional that sounds incredible. I have an Emmons P/P that sounds good but I've played some other P/P's that sounded even better. I would have to say that I like the Sho Bud sound the best, and then the Emmons P/P is next in line. I have a Zum Encore and an older Zum D10 that are both great sounding steels, but they don't have the personality that the Sho Bud or the Emmons P/P do. My two cents!

Rolling Eyes It all depends who's picking the string, plus the amp. Emmons or Green could make any guitar sound great.

As the old Chet Atkins/Paul Yandell story goes...

"Chet, that new guitar sounds great!"

Chet puts guitar in stand and says...

"How's it sound now?"

I’m very very spoiled With my Zum D-10 Hybrid. Seems to be perfect everywhere, but my buddy Dave Jackson has got an old Push/Pull that reminds us why we do this in the first place.

Nothing sounds as good as a ZB and a very close second to Fender 400/1000, ...R&B Buds get honorable mention....
