Hi Everyone.
I'm a new member from the UK. I've been playing for a long time, but more seriously nowadays. I have millions (well a lot) of recorded songs/pieces produced over the years. I've joined the Forum in the hope of sharing some of this stuff with other players: it can be a solitary lifestyle playing steel (especially in the UK). My music ranges from straight country to the weirdest things imaginable, although always 'true' to the PSG I hope. At its heart is always improvisation, a subject I've written 2 books on by the way. Anyway, it would be great to get some feedback and start talking to some other steelies. My music can be heard/seen in the following places:

Actually, I came across your (very fine) playing just over a year ago when I sold my Nashville 400 amp to a guy called Colm Murray who steered me in your direction, I think he may have bought an S10 C6 off of you (?). Anyway, seeing you play jazz standards was a sobering experience, so I quietly forgot that idea. Ironic, as my Band (Stinky Winkles) were voted 'Young Jazz Musicians of the Year in 1979 (I know!!), and even weirder, appeared on the front page of Jazz Journal in April 2020 (see link)

In fact, Stinky Winkles did a very strange version of Misty, which helped us win the above accolade, but that is the only standard I've ever learnt.
I Bought the Williams U12 rather than a D10 for my long-promised retirement present to myself, the reason being that I play neither western swing nor jazz, but wanted a more extended harmonic palette to play with. That said, I would still love to be able to make the B6 approximate the classic C6 sound that you've got off to a tee. So, yes, maybe I should try a couple of standards: any suggestions?

Love your signature! When I was a full time academic, one of my favourite things to say to 1st-year students, in their first class was: 'I really hate it when people say to me "Hey you! Get out of my garden!"' Obviously, they thought I was nuts, which is a good way into academia...but I digress.
Thanks for your response, yes I think some refreshments are definitely in order in the world of steel playing...I do (and will continue to do) my best. Not many people agree with me or listen to me though, but Hey! You did.

...thinking on about the idea of playing jazz standards, in response to Richard, I remembered a couple of things I put together a little while back that, while not standards, are definitely 'jazzy' to my ears. The steel is more accompaniment, but I think they (and it) work quite well.

Yes, floating in limbo between different genres can be a little alarming at times (I think it's a predicament rather than a choice), one always worries about the 'Jack of all trades, master of none' label sticking. But I think the refusal to settle down comfortably within any given genre has kept me curious over the years and certainly motivates me to continue working on my playing on a daily basis rather than worrying too much about the context.

PS: I love Portland, I was out there visiting and doing a bit of teaching at PNCA in about 2011. Best IPA I've ever had! And I spent a fortune in Powell's bookshop.

Hi Richard
I remember reading a while back of a young (and very good) steel player having some lessons with Susan Alcorn. He remarked that she knew more chords than he knew notes! I think we might be getting into that kind of territory here. But if I can get a version of Blue Bossa together with the 3 chords I know, then everyone will be happy. I'll get back to you!
