Steelers, check out this guy’s Yakety Axe on an American Standard telecaster. Watch for the lightning-fast pickup switches at 53 seconds and 1:25, and the hybrid picking in the middle section.

Best Tele player I've seen Whoa!

I love tele players who use the heavier strings and really make at the thing "bark". Does anyone know a tele player who specializes in this?

Red Volkaert uses 11-52’s. Just about every other Tele player you’ve ever heard of uses 10’s or even 9’s. If you have tree stumps for fingers and Popeye forearm muscles, you could go the SRV route and try 13’s.*

There is a lot more to tone than string gauge. I like the tone the guy in the video is getting.

*Keep in mind, SRV tuned down a half step.

I used to go listen to a guy named Wendel Adkins who was a Waylon Jennings impersonator, he played at Whiskey River in Dallas. He sometimes had two Tele players, I remember sometime They had a bass tuneron their top string which they used for lowering the tuning on some songs. I think his main guitarist was named Joe DeGelia, who played a black telecaster with a black pick guard. He had some great steel players also. Later his band teamed up with David Alan Coe and they played together. Wendel is playing in Sweden now I believe. He was great. Here are some videos:

When he played at Whiskey River between every set he would go and stand outside the women's rest room! God's gift to women is what I guess he thinks.
