Please offer your experiences using a JBL E140 and Altec 421-8 for steel use. I know they weigh a lot, but how do they sound?

Is there a noticeable difference between alnico magnets versus ceramic?

Thanks,

Don

they're both bass speakers so good for low c6 notes. they might be muddy sounding.

Don,
No experience with the Altec, but a big fan of the JBL E series. Much better power handling than the K series, and to my battered old ears, they sound every bit as good as the K's. As far as the 140, I had one and as Gary noted, it sounded great on the low end, but didn't have that sparkle on the top. I had it reconed to a 130 (they're mad on the same frame) and sound fantastic. I've used 130's in Session & Nashville 400's, in a Webb (original equipment), and now with a Little Walter, and it's the secret sauce every time.

do a search on the frequency response on these speakers and you will see what the upper end is like.

my advice...go with the 130 JBL series whether its K D or E.

go with the 418 altec series.

the weight comes with the territory. you want this sound...dont bring weight into the discussion, as you just have to deal with it. back in the day, weight translated to quality. now with neo D stuff, you can reduce weight and still have a good sound. but when you talk jbl/altec, the pounds come back on...Winking
