I'm listening to Ray's version of the Errol Garner tune a lot lately. I actually have the vinyl LP with this tune.
Got me wondering how this arrangement came about and who was responsible for it.
It's the kind of melody that sort of lends itself to the beat and instrumentation that Ray put on it....and it's still a timeless and memorable rendition some 45 years later.
Also won a grammy in 1975. No small feat.
I found this video where Ray explains how it came about.
Thought someone else might be curious as well.
Ray recognizes Joe McGuffee doing a fine job of covering Jay Dee's steel part. Maybe someone can ID the other band members.

There's a course where Mr.Maness explains his solo. There are also others from the Desert Rose Band

Well, no real questions Joachim. It was mainly about the way the arrangement developed. I just thought someone might ID the other musicians as well.
I have the tab for Jay Dee's work on the song, but it's above my ability I'm afraid.
The LP I spoke of is a Ray Stevens work of serious material. Songs like Deep Purple, Take Care of Business, Sunshine etc. Steel on the LP, aside from Misty, is Hal Rugg.
Ray is probably best known for his comedy stuff, but he is a very accomplished musician and can do serious material with the best of them. |

I love Ray's version. McGuffie has a very apt solo with Ray. Never was a more identifiable lick at the front of a solo.
Thanks for posting this live showing. It's a little quicker than the recorded version and lots of good energy.
