Topic: Stand alone reverb tank |

Digital reverb always sounds digital to me. How can you use reverb tanks as an external effect? Is it as simple as installing the tank(s) in a little box and plugging into the effects loop (NV112)?
Reverb tank characteristics are configured by the number of springs, length and gauge. Does anything else come into play?

| no. you have to have an entire circuit to drive the tank. learn to like the digital reverb, unless you play surf music. |

If you can find a Van Amps Sole-Mate, they're analog and they sound fantastic. However, since they're no longer in production, they're a little spendy nowadays.

Reverb pedals have come a long way in the last few years and there are many good units to be had. I use a Caitalinbread Talisman plate reverb for steel guitar and the Topanga reverb for surf style (boingy drippy) for guitar.
If your a purist and want a separate reverb unit with a tank like the Fender or Fox stand alone reverb, they are wonderful but you are carrying another piece of gear.
BTW, I had a FOX vintage reverb and sorry I sold it. I should have left it in my studio and continue to enjoy it. I guess we all have a piece of gear we let get away and regret it later.

As mentioned above you need a preamp circuit. An amp that has reverb has the circuit.
The transformers on the tank have their own sound but it is important that the impedance of these xformers match the circuit. The older Accutronics tanks out of decades ago gear have a better sound than the newer Accutronics models which is why some are using other tanks made by different companies.
The go-to was the Fender.
Mojotone makes a kit.

The ReVisit reverb tanks are supposed to sound like the old Accutronics.

I have their old reverb unit which is a spring in a great looking box. Way cheaper too. Matches my tweed suitcase amp that didn't have reverb. BTW, a nice amp for lap steel. |

I believe there’s a stand alone spring reverb called ‘Surfy Bear‘, tho’ I’ve never tried one.
They seem to have a following in the surf music community.

I had one of the original Fender stand alone reverbs that I would use along with a Fender bass amp.
A great sounding setup.
I traded them off for a Twin Reverb with JBLs.
I always wanted another Fender reverb so I picked up this reissue a few years ago.

I never had one Erv, always wanted one. 
Closest I came to an external Fender reverb was this thing.
Worked well for vocals.
Back then it was an Echorec if you were lucky to have one.
Italian steel
The Accutronics line of spring reverb came from Laurens Hammond, the Hammond organ company.
Laurens figured he had to put reverb in his organs since churches were being built acoustically dead to combat the reverb of the minister's voice getting washed out.
So Hammond put "space" into the organ using the spring tank solution.
Don Leslie followed suit by putting reverb in some models of his Leslies.
Fender got his reverb ideas from Hammond.

I’ve got 11 cabinets ready to cover. Been in the shop 3 years. Thing about finally building some more of these. Not a Fender circuit. Mine was a revised Premier 90 circuit that was reworked for more headroom and got rid of the hum that plagued the Premier 90.
