Sturgill's High Top Mountain album is loaded with fantastic pedal steel. And fantastic songs.
That's Robbie Turner? I don't know who because I got the album on iTunes, so no liner notes. There oughta be a law that says liner notes MUST be included with downloads. |

Yeah playing is great too. On tour though to my knowledge they're just a 4 piece. And yeah his lead player is probably the baddest croation chicken picker ever. |

Lead player is a friend of mine from Estonia:) He's really great, but too bad he pushed aside a steel player. That guitar guy (Laur Joamets) can imitate PSG sounds on his Tele thought.

What an awesome band! I've watched this show a few times and can't get enough. This is country music the way I like it. Even if there's no steel, it's so good you don't even miss the steel.
What I really love, and which I miss in Sturgill's later albums, great as they are, is this bass player in this show and his harmony singing. It's awesome! This kind of harmony singing is what makes me love country music (that and steel guitar, of course). It's very important to the sound. It reminds a bit of Ralph Stanley 's harmony singing. Anyone know who this bass player is and if he can be heard in any other bands or records?
My favorite song from this show is "BBC Blues" which starts at 06:22. It doesn't get better than that! (OK, maybe if you had Mooney on steel in could be a bit better  )

Look at any country chart and you'll never see Sturgill Simpson or other artists like him. That's because this kind of music isn't considered country by modern standards.
However, if you start examining music in the Americana genre, you'll find this music all over.
Somebody's done changed the country brand and country ain't country no mo'.

That's understandable. He changed his sound to heavy rock on his last album. But to be fair, it sounds like very good heavy rock (to my ears.)
You could hear the heavy rock influence in his music even before his well known country stuff, so it was probably a matter of time before he went all-out heavy rock.

That is some pretty hard rocking stuff. To me, it doesn't get any better for that kind of hard-driving heavy blues-rock.
But yeah, I miss the acoustic guitar sound, too. Maybe we'll see some more of the acoustic stuff on future albums. |

He's been a moving target ever since I started listening to him. Every album pivots from the last... which is also funny in a way because his distinctive singing stays the same throughout.
I saw him open for Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson at the MN State Fair the summer before Merle passed away. He opened his set by having a member of his band walk out on stage by himself and play a theremin. The man is simultaneously "what you see is what you get" and also constantly surprising you and keeping you guessing.
He sold out a medium-sized venue here in a few weeks and added another show the next night. Cody Jinks sold out the same place last month. It's nothing to scoff at. |

Funny did anyone else notice that one of his albums has a picture of him where he looks like he is trying to imitate Nathan Bedford Forrest.
I read a bit about him and what I gathered is this must be a coincidence as he doesn't seem sentimental to the "Wizard of the Saddle", nor am I. |

I didn't pick up that, but it's a hallmark of good cover art if it can invoke things for different people that have a world of personal meaning on their own. Sturgill Simpson doesn't beat on the white supremacy drum. My view on him is that he prefers to sit back and sample different cultural scenes that he thinks have something special going on... as opposed to championing any specific one. AKA he's a type of hipster. |
