Hoping that someone can help me out with this. I have a ZumSteel U-12. The 4th string tunes up fine but I can't adjust the knee lever (lower) intonation. No matter which way I turn the hexagonal nut, it does not effect the string at all. Upon a closer look at the underside of the guitar, everything seems to be in place in terms of the bell crank etc. What should I be looking for?

Really frustrated at this. And thank you for considering this, in advance,

Bradshaw

More info is necessary in order to help you. Are you attempting to raise or lower the string pitch with the KL? Does the guitar have "split" tuning screws at the end of the neck above the changer fingers?

If it does and you are wanting to lower this string, be sure the split screw is backed out of the neck and not preventing the changer finger from moving.

Did this problem just suddenly appear?

Have you made any changes to the linkage for that string or lever?

Turn the guitar over or crawl under it and see what the linkage, bell crank, rod etc. is doing when you operate the lever.

I suspect that your C Pedal or any 4th string raise is overtuned, release all 4th string pulls. Raise and Lowers. Many feel each pull , raise or lower is independent, they are not, its a fine balance.

Then re-adjust your 4 string lower, does it adjust ?

Start there , go from there.

Chack if there is a lower-limiting screw(aka split tuning screw) that prevents the 4th string from lowering or if there is some other foreign object stopping the changer finger from moving and performing the lowering action. Also possible to manaually check the lowering finger action by pushing gently with a screwdriver or pen at the changer mechanism where the lowering rod is supposed to move the lowering finger. NO rods should be affecting any fingers raise/lower unless pedals or levers are engaged.

If you have a return compensator on that string (probably a nylon tuner nut colored black) make sure it hasn’t accidently got overadjusted.

I would swap the nylon tuner with another to see if the problem shifted to the other change, and if the other nut now makes the string 4 change work. I had a similar problem on my Carter where turning the nylon tuner didn't affect the change. The threads inside the nylon tuner were stripped.

Keep it simple: The first thing to do is climb underneath and operate the lever, does the rod move? If it does it’s probably the nylon adjuster shot. If the rod isent moving see why.
