Here's a very old recording (1957) by Julie London; just her smoky/sexy voice and a guitar. Sometimes, I just like to listen to something simple and sparse, and I've often wondered what this song might have sounded like if it had been just Curly Chalker behind her (in the style of Stan Hitchcock's "Shadow of Your Smile).

That is very fine. She is the epitome of the torch singer for me.

The guitarist I couldn't identify, but it doesn't sound like Kessel to me. She made some wonderful recordings with just Barney on guitar, or Barney and standup bass. These recordings are a master class in backing up a singer.

On backing up a singer with pedal steel, there is a recording of Gib Wharton behind Cassandra Wilson on a Gershwin tune out there that someone pointed out to me, here on the forum I believe. It was great stuff, but I lost the bookmark in a computer snafu and was never able to find it again. It is a compilation/tribute album that doesn't appear on any C.W. discog I've seen.
Anybody know where/ how to find that?

One of my favorites! The embodiment of the word “intimate”.
It’s been said “Some singers sing as though they are addressing a crowd; some sing as though they are in a bar with a lot of people—[London] sings as though she's in one room, with you—and that's the difference."
A little closer that just in “one room”, if you ask me!
She smoked up to 3 packs a day since age 16. She was a very solitary person and never gave interviews. Married Jack Webb and Bobby Troup (who wrote ROUTE 66).
Here’s an amusing blooper. The highly sensitive or prudish should avoid it.

The guitar player was the great Al Viola, who is probably most famously associated with Frank Sinatra, but was also a prolific session musician. He could play anything, and frequently did. He also played the mandolin on The Godfather. He remains one of the best, and not sufficiently well-known, guitarists to ever play the instrument, IMO.

I don't think there has ever been a better torch singer than Julie London. That outtakes clip is hilarious.

I initially was introduced to Julie and Bobby Troup on the popular 70's Tv show 'Emergency', only to learn later that she was a singer and he, a great song writer. Yes, Bobby did 'Route 66', but just this last year, Michael Bourne of WBGO, the Newark, NJ jazz station did a great suite of songs that Julie sang and Bobby wrote, it was very impressive and made me respect their many talents.

Good thread!

One member who never heard Curly's playing on "The Shadow Of Your Smile" asked me to post a link to it:

I absolutely love Julie London ! In the 70s my guitar teacher in Arizona led me on to her because of Barney Kessel and "Cry me a River" fame, but once I discovered her voice I fell in lust ! She did another recording with Howard Roberts on guitar...I love her singing "No Moon at All" and "Round Midnight" is another favorite of mine. I could go on and on about her, but I better stop !

Definitely a favourite of mine. I have 36 CD's of her. I can never understand why she picked Jack Webb over me!!!! Great music back then.

Don't ask me how I found this - but Julie cold make even the most ostensibly vapid pabulum worthy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dot5vK3HTXY - Wrecking Crew with the great Al Casey on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, etc.

And then when you give her good material:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jux3R2i3TpE (same personnel)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnYTJxLzqoc (the ever under-rated John Gray on guitar here too)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvyfow0zkN8 (she comes through even with the syrupy, overwhelming, easy-listening strings)
