Topic: Definitive Western Swing Instruction |

So I’m a newbie to PSG and trying to devour as much as I can related to musicality, theory and technique. But I’m having a time finding Western Swing genre specific instructionals that really dig in. Think Robben Ford but on Pedal steel (if that means anything to anyone). Suggestions?

Most true western swing is played on non pedal steel. Finding instruction will be difficult. Get some Bob Wills, Johnny Lee Wills, Hank Penny and Spade Cooley records and learn it the old fashioned way. To me Tom Morrell was the best western swing steel player ever. He played both pedal and non pedal. In his later years he only played non pedal.

| You should think about a T-8 non-pedal if you want that traditional Western swing sound. I am also studying the Western swing players and I have a 56 Stringmaster T-8 long scale and a Remington 8-8-10 triple neck. Cindys is probably the best |

Jerry Byrd said the same about Tom. He thought he was the best ever. |

Buddy's Basic C6 course is a great place to start and includes Right Or Wrong I believe.
you can certainly play any western swing material on a D-10 pedal steel, including the E9. Herb Steiner did a C6 chord primer that should be easy to find, and it's free.

| I believe Cindy's course uses non-pedal C6. If so, you can use your C6 neck without using the pedals with her course. If you like, you can invest in pedal steel C6 instruction later. |

Thank you everyone!
I’ve picked up Cindy’s lessons and I’m already in the PFM. The C6 material for theory is incredibly helpful.
As a side note - is the Jeffran material now truly available? I keep getting solicitations but was told by many that ordering (and actually receiving) was a crap shoot.

Herb Steiner has a lot of Swing stuff tabbed out for C6 pedal steel, with backing tracks and example tracks. He does not do a lot of instruction, per se, but that on top of the Cindy Cashdollar course will get you pretty deeply rooted into a lot of swing songs - enough to figure out most others, I would think.
Cindy's course is best with an 8-string C6 lap steel, not 6-string. You could manage with the 6-stringer, but you will have to work around the missing strings at times.
