I have always wondered why Mullen has a key head with a crack in it.
It seems like most all the other makers have a one piece key head.
Is for ease of manufacture, better tone or what?

I'm guessing ease of manufacturing. The keys aren't part of the nut. The roller nut is one piece, and the key pieces are identical and 'book matched' . Maybe Mike will jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong (which I commonly am!) 😃 |

Wouldn't a one piece key head contribute to enhanced sustain?

Mullen offers both. I ordered my new Mullen with the one piece keyhead. I think it looks better. |

Dale,
I was unaware of that.
All I've seen are the ones with the crack.

I was also unaware of that. I didn’t know they were 2 piece until I got mine, but the fit is excellent as is the sound! 😀 |

What is the reason for a two piece head?
Why do they even make it that way if you can order a one piece head?
If I'm not mistaken, the Emmons short key head model guitar also has a crack in the key head.

We do use a two piece key head for manufacturing reasons. It would take so much material to make that many one piece key heads. We do all of our own machining so machining time is a high factor. We did come out with a one piece key head, and the differences is not much. |

Mike,
Is there an additional charge for a one piece keyhead?
