Can anyone help me with choosing a first resonator guitar. I have a $200.00 credit with Guitar Center. For sale they have a Rogue Classic Spider for $200.00 and a King Dirty 30s for $250.00. If anyone can give me some insight, it would be greatly appreciated.

In the lower price point, I'd see if they have Recording King's or Gretch's
I'd avoid the Rogue like the plague.

Not my experience. FWIW around 2007 or 08, I bought a Rogue Classic Spider square neck from them. It was a good entry level guitar...spun cone, pretty good set up. Fit and finish was also good. The biggest caveat about buying from MF/GC is the shipping. The first one of these I received was broken in pieces due to poor packing, they did a better job with the 2nd one.
Different eras may have different mfgs., different quality issues, but the one I had was just fine.
No experience with the fretted round neck Rogue or the RK.
Perhaps someone who has actual experience with both can offer more advice. |

Round or square neck?
I have a Gretsch boxcar that I like a lot. There are a couple I saw on GCs used site, along with a few hound dogs. A good setup can go a looooong way on a resonator.
I’ve had a regal and a recording king which were great. I also used to have a redline, which was really nice. The gretsch works for me. |

| You are considering two completely different types of reso's, a spider (Dobro) style and a biscuit ( National) style. Quality wise, instruments in that price range will be similar so i say, go try them and let your instincts guide you. |

| If you're wanting to play squareneck, Gretsch has a model called the Gretsch G9210 Boxcar. I played a Gretsch Boxcar when I first started playing. |

I've been happy with my Gretsch G9230 Bobtail. It's a squareneck. Not the most exciting instrument from a strictly acoustic standpoint, but it seems to be put together well for a lower-cost guitar. Plus it has the Fishman Nashville pickup installed; that coupled with a good preamp can get you some pretty decent sounds.
