Hi. I probably shouldn't be in this company as a beginner, but all my life I have wanted to play a musical instrument.
Having recently undergone two major arterial operations, triple bypass and carotid arteries and awaiting another on the carotid on the other side I have decided that I WILL learn to play the lap steel, no pedals, NOW, before it's too late.
I don't want to regret not having done this at the end.
I have bought a lapsteel, and amp etc and Joedocmusic DVDs. What I would like are some fairly easy tabs in C6th C E G A C E and some lessons. I am having trouble finding any such tabs. I am a keen country and western fan if that helps.

| Just had my second triple bypass myself. Lessonswithtroy.com helped me out a lot . gregcutshaw.com has a lot of tabs and backing tracks. |

Hi Neville -
Welcome - you've come to the right place!
The steel is going to be bit of a challenge with different string grips and bar slants, etc. but if you stick with it, I'm sure your effort will be rewarded.
When you are comfortable with the basics of the instrument, you can't go wrong with the many beautiful arrangements posted by FoBro Bert Farroach. See below for an example of his work. Then do a Search on his name in the Tablature section.

Also highly recommend Doug Beaumier (do Forum and YouTube searches) who not only plays exquisitely but is also a first-rate teacher.

| Hey Neville, I've had 3 heart attacks and prostate surgery and I'm 79 yrs old. I started playing the pedal steel 5 years ago and have never regret starting to play. I just do it for my own enjoyment and I'm having fun trying to learn. I'm also going to get my motorcycle license this summer as another thing on my bucket list. Lap steels are nice but you will probably want a pedal steel very shortly because are so much more versatile. Good luck with your playing. |

Just want to add my two cents.
I always loved pedal steel. I finally got started on it at age 61. I’m now 64. Even though I have a neurological condition that makes PSG even more challenging than it already is, I play and practice religiously.
IT IS NEVER TOO LATE, AND NEVER IMPOSSIBLE.

Don't dismiss any of the old standbys.
Dewitt Scott's basic C6 method is really good to start with. The simple songs in the beginning of the book are really good to start with.
There are a number of them in the back of the book that are keepers. I still play the Great Speckled Bird much like he has it in the book.

I am fairly new to lap steel,but not NEW NEW,I have been playing guitar,dabbled with pedal steel and many different lap steel,even had one made for me by the late Tom Pettingill,sold them all then got back at it again.Now have what i figure is the one i will stick with,a Fender Dual6 tuned Open G and C6.I have a Supro Jet Airline for sale in C6.Any way Love learning, play mostly at home and age is only a number.I'll never be like Troy,Doug etc,but having fun.

Now have a SX 6 string lap in G,.A Tele plus telecaster, Larrivee acoustic.Also have a Fender resonator guitar with new Quarterman cone and spider,and an Allan tailpiece.Playing through a Fender Super Champ XD,using a little delay on the amp and a Harmonix Holy Grail Echo pedal,set on Hall turned to about 1pm.Just got a Fender Dual 6 Stringmaster style. Bought a Yamaha FGX5 Recently and love it. |
