It's time to retire our old Zoom H4 recorder. Looking for one that has easier to read font in the window and where you don't have to drill down 2 or 3 levels to access common functions. I see Tascam has a few models. As anybody used one of those or a newer Zoom or any other brand and model to recommend?
Thank you in advance. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

I can't speak for the most recent Tascam recorders, but I had a Zoom H4 that burned in a house fire, so I replaced it a few years ago with a Tascam (DR05 maybe??) that was on sale.
It never sounded as good as the Zoom to my ears.. very 'artificial' and bandwidth limited.
It might be the mics I suppose, but I retired the Tascam and bought the newest version of the Zoom H4 again, and the sound is definitely better.
YMMV... |

My Zoom H1 is very user (dummy) friendly , and sounds good to my ears. Don't know if they are still available. |

Jim,
I have 2. Recommended depending on your needs.
The mentioned DR05 is simple, handy and sounds great.
I also have the Tascam DR40X that adds 2 XLR mic inputs (phantom power as well) to the internal mics. VERY flexible. I'll often use the 2 pairs to record gigs, sans mixer. I think I paid approx $169.

I think its highly probable that they all have a bunch of WINDOWS to dig deep. I don't find that an issue for me, I record with an H2 in 128 MP3 mode , rarely do I change it.
I also have a Tascam DR-03. The mics are not near as good as the H2, same deal though, once it is setup I rarely change it.
One thing I do not do is listen back using either. The SD cards are plugged into the PC where I use another PC based program to edit, cut, save, delete, etc...
IF I had to replace the Zoom H2, I would replace it with
DRUM ROLL PLEASE ...............

Zoom H2 ! I use a high end remote recorder by sound devices and it is complicated to read with all the drop down menus also. _________________ Bob |

For simplicity and great quality I use the Tascam DR-05.
I also have the Tascam DR 44WL 4 channel portable. ITs a great recorder but I use the DR-05 due to its simplicity. |
