It just amazes me how much better one guitar can sound over the other.
Don't get me wrong...my Carter plays great but, I have noticed on the last 3 Carters I have owned, that once you get up into Hughey land that the sound starts to fall off. I thought it was just me. NOPE!
New string, old strings, whatever.
I have to really push the volume pedal down hard to get any quality of sound out of it.
Now my MSA Legend...........WOW!
There is just no comparison to me at all!
Better tone, and just better play-a-ability overall...
My Carter is much much lighter than the MSA. I wonder if that makes a difference. Hummmmmm..
Merry Christmas everyone.. |

Absolutely. When I was playing Carters it just seemed to disappear above about fret 17. That’s when I switched back to Emmons.

Thanks for the compliment. I have to admit, I'm spoiled. I've played MSAs for 40 years. I've sat down at other guitars, but the only one I really liked was a Dekley. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

We are fortunate to have as a semi-local here in NorCal the great Bobby Black. Depending on the gig he will either go with a pedal steel or non-pedal.
When he brings a pedal guitar, for years it has been a Carter D-10, he owns at least two or three of them.
All I know is that they sure sound great to me. Beautiful, rich tone. Like the earlier comment from Buddy Emmons, I guess an awful lot of it has to do with the "driver." _________________ Mark |

You could put ten strings on a rusty old trash can and give him a beer can for a slide and Buddy Emmons would make it sound phenomenal. 🤔 _________________ Pre RP Mullen D10 8/7, Zum 3/4, Carter S-10 3/4, previous Cougar SD-10 3/4 & GFI S-10 3/4, Fender Steel King, 2 Peavey Session 500's, Peavey Nashville 400, Boss DD-3, Profex-II, Hilton Digital Sustain, '88 Les Paul Custom,Epiphone MBIBG J-45, Fender Strat & Tele's, Takamine acoustics, Marshall amps, Boss effects, Ibanez Tube Screamer, and it all started with an old cranky worn out Kay acoustic you could slide a Mack truck between the strings and fretboard on!! |

I dunno man.. It wasn't too many years ago when several great professional steel players that could afford to play any guitar they wanted to were seen playing Carter guitars. Like many other brands they had their day in the sun, and fewer pros use them onstage these days , but they would NEVER have gotten the reputation they had if they "died" as the bar went higher up the neck. Perhaps there are a few "dead" ones out there, it happens.. Big variations in sound among steels of the same brand and model.. Wood, pickups, mechanics, part fitment, strings, electronics used downstream, amp, SO many variables.. Got a guitar that dies??.. Try a different string brand, or a new pickup , maybe volume pedal or amp as well.. Carters were not a brand that "died as you went up the neck" in my book,, They were and are a great sounding steel guitar that stood up well, and went toe to toe with its competitors,,
I am glad you like your MSA, and happy it gives you the sound you desire while playing it.
If the Carter does not, might be time to pass it on to someone that does desire it, and will enjoy it the same way you enjoy your MSA.
Believe me there are a LOT of players that would love to play and listen to your "dead up the neck" Carter... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

The late great Bobbe Seymour once said, something like this...
Yep those are all Push Pulls but they all ain't GOOD Push Pulls !
I once loaned him my Nashville 1000 to use at a show, he plugged in then said to me, I love Nashville 1000's, but not this one ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders

Aren't the laws of physics at play here essentially stating that as the length of the string between the bar and the bridge shortens, the sustain will shorten as well? |

That's true, but some guitars (not necessarily brands) do better up high, just as some do better down low. As for me, personally, sustain isn't the main thing I look for in a guitar.
As for the main topic, I think the term "better" is nothing but an opinion. And, if everyone's opinion was the same, we'd all be paying the same thing. In the end, I think the best answer is to just choose and play what you like, and let others choose and play what they like.
How well you play is far more important than what you play.

Some years back, Big Jim Baron produced a steel show featuring Jeff Newman, David Wright, Bobby Black and Jay Dee Maness. Jay Dee played an Emmons push pull, Bobby Black played a Carter, David played a Sierra, and Jeff had both a Carter and a Zum. (Both of which were red.)
We got to hear Jeff play both, and had a chance to compare them. Both guitars sounded fine, but Personally, I preferred the Zum. I thought it had a little more growl.
That said, If somebody gave me a Carter for Christmas, I'd happily play it. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

The new Legends are absolutely gorgeous, but if I were to buy a new MSA, I'd get a Studio Pro.
Having owned a lacquer guitar for 25 years, I saw the color fade, and the guitar get scratched and dinged up a little. The guitar still played and sounded great, but it looked its age.
It seems to me that the Studio Pro might be less susceptible to that kind of cosmetic damage over time. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Come to find out that replacing my GL E-66 pickup on my Carter has fixed the problem. I guess it was somehow starting to fail.
The BL-710 sounds great on this guitar. It has much more punch and the lows and highs are more defined.
I am not an expert or a pro player but I do know whether something sounds right or not. Now it sounds great!
Merry Christmas Everyone.
May the season be kind and giving to you and your families.
Don't forget the reason for the season.
God Bless us all. |

Sometimes the difference between individual guitars of the same brand is greater than the difference between brands. Pickups can make a huge difference, for example. Or the piece of wood used for the top deck. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
