Topic: Zinging .....not again |

Hi all,
My quite new PSG has a zing on the top F#.It does not happen on open string only when bar is applied.There are NO grooves on finger ( checked with a 40x lens) and the guitar is not old and with anodised fingers..If I press the string against the finger with my finger hard it will disappear and then return ,especially if I don't play for a day or so.Any ideas please. |

A tiny drop of oil where the string goes over the finger may prevent what you're hearing.
Use oil...not some dry lube product! |

| Sounds like the string is "Work Hardening" where it leaves the fingers curve. Once that little section work hardens from bending with a raise or lower, It will not bend and pull down solid on the finger, This can be a problem on any string that is raised, lowered or raised and lowered like 4 and 8 on E9th neck. That is the sound that says,"Its string changing time". |

You say it doesn't happen open but when you use the bar. Sounds like you're not applying enough pressure especially if you're playing at the first fret. If you haven't accidentally put on the wrong gauge string then I suspect bar pressure.
Even after 40 years of playing,I tend to play with light bar pressure now and then and I hear it too.

Hi guys
Many thanks for the replies.Ill investigate all your ideas.
I don't think it is bar pressure as I have tried light and heavy pressures.Funny how applying pressure to string near changer temporary alleviates the problem .May be the way the string hangs over the finger at the witness point.

| Used to run into that problem when I was playing Rains guitars years ago. I would keep trying different gauge/brand strings until one would work. D'Addario's is what I'd try today. Really is a difference. Good luck buddy ! |

Another thought is that the wrap on the string may be lifting the string just enough to where it doesn't contact the top of the finger. Some strings have a long wrap and some short.
